My family decided to take a break, and what better place than Wayanad to 'chill' in January! Finding the place wasn't very tough, but if you follow Google maps/navigation it will take you through some really bad interior roads. Instead stick to the highway till you reach Pinangode and then you can find signboards leading you to Grassroots. This is nearly a 2 acre coffee estate with quite a few arecanut trees. The accommodation is via tents, there are 5 Luxury Swiss tents. Tents are very clean and spacious, well thought out and decor is good. Split AC, Two huge (nearly queen size) beds, TV with videocon d2h. Sheets are very clean and mattresses were comfortable. The bamboo mat blinds cover the veranda and can be rolled up well to get a decent view. The trees had grown quite a bit, so we did not have an uninhibited view of the river/stream. For dining, you would need to head down from your tents to the dining area. It was hot during the day and starts getting cold right after sunset. At night, the temperatures can get really low outside (as it is January), but it does not feel as cold inside the tents. The blankets and quilts come handy to keep warm. You can take a 1 hour walk into a nearby tea estate and walk over a 100 ft long rickety suspension bridge with a few side rails missing. Good for a little adventure :) Other than this, there isn't a whole lot to do on the property. Around dinner time, a campfire is arranged. You can go to the Banasura Sagar dam and the waterfalls which is about 10 km away from the property. The view of the sunset from a viewpoint en route to the Banasura Sagar dam is enchanting. Other nearby activities are covered on their website. We stayed for two nights there and housekeeping isn't done unless you ask for it and request for new Bath towels etc. Hot water is provided via solar heating, so have to wait a bit for hot water, else you will have to finally took a cold shower, a toilet soap was provided. You may want to get your Bath soap/shower gel and shampoo. If you are going by self-drive on your own car, ensure to take all documents (including insurance and PUC). The cops check both at entry and exit. Parkway who is the caretaker of the property is always very helpful with any request. The staff (Shivu and others) are very courteous and always ready to serve with a smile. The food was excellent every time (breakfast, lunch or dinner). Both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food was good, the desserts were awesome too. In that small quaint place, the chef made sweets like rasgulla, Gulab jamun and vanilla ice cream too! Hats off to him. Overall a very comfortable and pleasant stay, and would recommend for at least a day's stay at Grass roots.
This was my first visit to this part of Kerala and it was a dream come true to stay in Grassroots. While booking, I knew we were to stay in Swiss tents but I had no idea how it would be like . . I took a cab to reach Wayanad and hence Grassroots, we had directions but it was difficult to find the place as it had no sign boards or hoardings on the root so we called the owner/manager who was really helpful in getting us reach there Once I reached, it was a pleasant surprise to see such a luxurious tent, they were clean and were equipped with every possible amenities provided by a good hotel room. It was gorgeous. The location was completely amongst the coffee estates, so adventurous people can take a hike to see the scenic beauty and feel the lovely weather. As it was cut off from the main city, we had the food there which was really good . Grassroots is the place to be for a relaxed and beautiful holiday.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Grassroots. The tent was much more than a tent and a haven of luxury and very good feel, we can feel the nature perfectly. A nice place to rejuvenate. Make your trip in advance and try to stay during monsoons with at least 2 nights.
