Haridwar is the spiritual centre of the Hindus and is said to be land, which has been metaphorically marked with the footprints of the gods. Haridwar acts as the gateway to the pilgrimages in the Garhwal region, namely Gangadwar, Mayapur and Mokshadwar.
All these Char Dhams have been mentioned in the primeval epics and scriptures of the Hindus and it is Haridwar that has been considered as a chief Shaktipeeth and hence it acquires the name “the gateway to the gods”. Haridwar being one of the oldest cities in India has seen the transitions in the life of Indians from the old ages through the era of Buddha to the period of British dominations.
According to the legends, the most sacred river of India, holy Ganges has been blessed by the holy trinity in Hindu mythology, ie, Lord Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu before allowing it to flow through this city.
With the passage of time, the city and district of Haridwar has retained its spiritual importance. It is believed that a holy dip in the Ganges purifies body, mind and soul. Two events that take place in Haridwar and bears great religious significance are the Kumbh Mela that is held once in every 12 years and the Ardh Kumbh Mela that happens once in 6 years.
Haridwar is not only the centre for religion, but also for learning culture, art and science in India. This place has served as the hub of herbal remedies and Ayurvedic medicines. The exclusive Gurukul School situated here provides education in a traditional way. Haridwar is one of the first cities where Ganga emerges from the mountains touching the plains. The Ganga Aarti at Haridwar with uncountable numbers of marigold flowers and lighted with ‘Diyas’(small lamps) floating on the water are some of the main attractions.
Within the district of Haridwar, as per the Hindu traditions, there are five pilgrimage spots or the “Panch Tirth”- Gangadwar at Har Ki Pauri, Bilwa Teerth or the temple dedicated to Mansa Devi, Kushwart Ghat, Kankhal and the Neel Parvat, a temple dedicated to Chandi Devi.
People interested in adventure and wildlife, can visit the Rajaji National Park around 10 km from Haridwar. Within the city and around are many ashrams and temples and practice strict restriction against non- vegetarian food and alcohol consumption in Haridwar.
