Magnificiant Leh

Post by Girish | Delhi | Nov 16, 2012

Please intake lot of water. for first 2 days relax and take adequate sleep don't allow yourself to get dehydrated. Many people take the water thing too far, imho. Avoid alcohol if you are planning to trek. Also coffee. But tea is fantastic and plentiful. Wash hands before and after meal with soap. Probably the most important tip. There are wash sinks in the restaurants and foreign tourists hardly ever use them but the locals do. Buy your water from the two boiled water shops. Just ask people where they are when you get there. Its cheaper than bottled water too and will help keep the plastic rubbish problem down. If trekking, take some alchol hand gel for hand washing in places where the conveniences are limited. Use detergents when you wash your dishes, but don't put them in the streams. Take the water away from the stream to rinse off your plates. Do not put any soapls or detergents in the streams. Do not leave any rubbish, however small in the environment. Burn it or take it back to town. Take usual small travellers first aid kit. Take lip balm, sunblock, decent hat (not a cap) to prevent sunburn and dry skin. I can't comment on the weather with any precision. Someone else will or do a search.

Very near to the abode of peace

One must be very careful about high altitude sichness. One must take rest for atleast 48-72 hours with plenty of water 3-4 litres a day. As there is scanty of oxygen content in the air. You can reach there by air from Delhi or by road either from Manali or Srinagar.

Out of the World

Post by Nikhil | Mumbai | Jun 26, 2012

One should travel via Manali & should conclude enroute Kargil to Srinagar. One should carry heavy woolens, sun glasses, sun screen lotion, dry fruits for the personal use. One should drink minimum 3 litters of water daily to get oxygen & to keep oneself safe as oxygen is very low due to high altitude. People advice for high altitude medicines to carry but I will say only water drinking is the biggest safety for anyone. One should walk slowly after reaching, avoid tobacco as it obstruct your breathing power & also avoid alcohol as it dehydrates the body & again it makes difficult for the body to get the oxygen. One should also keep camphor to grow the breathing power.
