The roads are very pathetic. At places the roads were almost not there. Going in a smaller vehicle is almost impossible. Even in a bigger vehicle like ours (Sumo), a very skilful driver is required to negotiate these bad roads. It is only the scenic beauty all around which made our trip worthwhile.

We arrived at Bagdogra by Jet Airways flight from Kolkata. We were there at around 11 in the morning and hired an Innova car at the rental run by the State Government. The cab was in decent condition but the service was pathetic. After paying the due amount and getting on to the cab, we came to know that the AC service will not be provided. Had to call back the concerned authorities and sort the issue out. Even then, the driver was adamant that he'll not provide the service once the ghat road starts. Clearly, a case of paying for the service and not getting value-for-money.

But the journey from Bagdogra to Gangtok, through the mountains and the ghat road was a pleasure. We stopped at a small dhaba mid-journey and had wi-wi noodles. Apparently, wi-wi is a popular noodle brand in this part of the country. There are ample dhabas along the route. You can also see the pristine waters of the Teesta river that flows through Sikkim. The river has magical green colour waters, which make it all the more special. The climate keeps getting colder as we approach Gangtok. So, it is advised to take out the warm clothes and keep them handy at the start of the journey itself.

The Hidden Forest Retreat was suggested to us by a common friend as the hotel-to-be in Gangtok. And true to the word, it lived up to the expectations and beyond. The retreat is not a regular hotel. It's a unique experience and leaves you wanting for more. It is nestled in a quiet, serene locale...more »

We started from Bagdogra to Darjeeling by Tavera which we hired at the airport. It was a very well- planned trip and we saw tea gardens, watched the toy train, steam engine, then after spending some time we went to the mall having local snacks, excellent momos, egg fry, egg rolls at the mall.
Morning at 5 went for sunrise, excellent view, due to clear sunny weather; it was a mesmerizing experience. Then went to Kalimpong and had an excellent fresh breakfast, did paragliding and again itís a very superb feeling. Specially the cacti garden with around 1500 collection, the place is scenic with good roads, with good dhabas and eating places. Orange orchids, river all along the route was a very comfortable journey.

Roads are comfortable and city seems safe. Gangtok looks like mini country in its own and very well- organised. Fortunate to reach Nathula and the snowy ashram as well. The lake has its own charm and the colourful clad yaks. I would suggest everyone to follow this, I was very much happy and satisfied with my trip, great experience and very cordial Sikkim tourism staff.

Only SUVs ply between the two places. Sadly the road can only just be called a road. Potholes and narrow, with plenty of slow moving moments, mainly due to blocks created by landslides. Hardly any food is available on the way so don't forget to stock up at Bagdogra/Silliguri. A few waterfalls on the way some natural and a plenty man-made due to the absence of washrooms.
