Balm for the soul

Post by Florien | Mumbai | Oct 24, 2007

Carry thick soled walking shoes, a sturdy bamboo or walking stick - to walk on the pebble strewn trails and to ward off the monkeys. Carry a rechargeable flashlight, the power goes off at regular intervals. If you are an early riser, carry a tea making kit as hotels do not provide tea before 7am. The drive from Bombay is approx 11/2 hrs by rd. taking the Expressway to Shedung, then via Chowk and Neral. Leave Bombay by 7 and you will reach there in an hour. From Dasturi Car Park you will have to walk or go on horseback or hand riksha to reach your hotel. MTDC is the closest, 5 min away - not fancy, but right in the middle of the forest. Go in off season and enjoy Matheran at its best.

Pollution free hill station!

Matheran is pretty much accessible by all means of transports. You can reach within 2.5 hours at max from Mumbai or Pune. The nearest railway station is Neral. There are lot of taxis you can hire to reach the hill station. However they stop you at the entrance. From there you need to walk for around 3-4 kms to reach the heart of Mathehran.

Closest tranquil destination to Mumbai

One can get to Matheran by car via Chowk Neral and ghat road to Dasturi carpark or toy train from Neral station or by mini ST bus plying from Neral and Karjat stations to Dasturi. From Dasturi rent a horse or a hand pulled riksha. Or simply, walk! Take the railway track route if walking from Dasturi to the market area as it is an easier walk with good views of the forest and the valley below.
