I had been to salem by train in November 2014 for a sight-seeing trip. I boarded the Yesvantpur - Salem passenger which departs from Yesvantpur junction at around 16:05 minutes in the evening. It reaches Salem Junction at approximately 21:00 hours in the night. It goes via byappanahalli, hosur, dharmapuri, thoppur and omalur. The total time taken for this journey is approximately 4:45 minutes altogether covering the distance of 225 kilometers between the two majestic cities. The best time to visit Salem is between November to March. Yercaud is a must-see near Salem town what with many hair pin bends to be traversed to reach this abode of majestic beauty. The Raja seat in Yercaud is a must-visit destination when one can feel the cool breeze in the evening hours.
All along the Highway takes just about 4 hrs or may be less with no breaks. Good eating joints en-route closer to Bangalore though. Had breakfast at a huge restaurant. Good food and road is good throughout. Overall, a comfortable journey. Enough gas stations all along.
Personally driving in NH-7 is a pleasure inside Tamil Nadu. There are lots of food joints around Krishnagiri and the road is simply awesome. Only issue is lots of toll plazas, so we need to be spending a lot of money. We need to be little careful though, since there are lots of stupid drivers around.
I moved to Yercaud via Salem. One could start in the morning, spend the day at the hill station and come back in the evening. Itís a small drive to chill the thrust and it was a pleasant drive through the hills. It is almost the centre place of Tamilnadu. You can go to all the major cities from here easily.
I travelled by State Express Transport Corporation (SETC) bus from Salem to Bangalore last month. Itís a semi sleeper bus and they donít provide any entertainment movies inside the bus neither reached the destination on proper time itís was waste travelling in this SETC bus. Nothing was provided.
A request to all the travellers please donít travel in this bus otherwise you are wasting your money completely.
