There are good roads and beautiful sceneries through out. Punjabi Dhabas are very good place for on road food. Some of them are having toilets much much better than Delhi airport's equivalents. There are many toll plazas spoiling the smooth flow of vehicles. Some of them have very long boring traffic block.
This new train between Amritsar and Chandigarh is a boon. It is a super fast express and with AC coaches as well. It takes approx 5 hours and is always on time. Food is served within. The roads are much better, but on a hot day without an AC vehicle, it would be a difficult travel. The AC in our vehicle was not working, so had a very difficult time. It takes around 4-5 hours of travel, I suppose it depends on the traffic. I understand there are Govt Benz buses between these cities.
Time taken to reach Amritsar from Chandigarh was three and half hours. Bus was very clean and comfortable. Either you can take a short nap or watch a movie and by the time you feel fresh you are at Amritsar. The bus drops you at hall gate which is very near to Golden Temple.
