The distance between Chennai and Kumbakonam is around 300 km. It takes almost 6 hours, to reach Kumbakonam from Chennai, by car. THough there are many routes, the best route to Kumbakonam, is to take the NH45 till Ulundurpet(bypass), then take the SH69 to Virudachalam, later, the SH141/140 via Andimadam to Jayankonam, turn left to Gangaikonda Cholapuram and then, along the NH45C till Kumbakonam. The road is good for most of the distance, except for the area near Varudachalam, where driving in top gear can be impossible.

The roads on Highway on most of parts from Chennai to Kumbakonam is good. But sudden rains at times slows down the speed because of water logging at some areas. The level of hospitality with honesty and guidance needs improvement by local temple authorities for better crowd pulling and to enhance sense of spirituality!! Overall, it is good experience and had a good lessons!!
The train leaves around 8 in the morning and reaches Kumbakonam around 2 Pm. It stops at 10 Stations in between - This should not deter us if we choose an A/c 2 tier or A/c first class we can travel horizontally. The train kept the timing and food was sold inside the compartment by vendors. The train was reasonably clean.
After the main Highway up-to Vikravaandi, we took detour towards Panruti, Vadalur, Sethiathoppu to Kumabakonam. The road after the bridge up-to the diversion point is horrendous. Hundreds of dippers are ruining the roads. In addition, the climate was too hot and dehydrating. Couldn't find any good eateries beyond Vikravaandi.
I have experienced a very poor punctuality from Rathimeena Travels last night. The bus expected to arrive at boarding point Pallavaram at 11. 15 Pm but it arrived at very late at 12. 05 Am. Also there was no response from travels when we tried calling them to know about the status. Both mobile numbers and land-line were switched off..
Really it was a frustrating moment to wait for 1 hr. Where none bothered to update the passengers about the delay.
Certain roads were narrow so we have to go slow, which takes long time to travel. Must always ask for guide to a knowledge person or else you will be diverted because after certain point there are many routes to Kumbakonam so should ask for good road route.
