We took Train from Coimbatore by CBE Mailadumthurai Jhan Sathabdi Express and reached Thanjavur by 12.00 pm. Went to 'New Bus stand', which is about 5 kms away from railway station, by local bus. Then took one local bus. But the bus took around three and half hours to reach Velankanni which is 102 KM away from Thanjavur. As we have 8 members, it is not viable to take two taxies from Railway station. Taxi drivers sought 1500 for Ambassedor and 1300 for Indica (Non AC). Buses from railway station to new bus stand will be available opposit to the railway station entrance.

On the way out, I drove from Bangalore to Salem, where I had a day's work to finish, and spent the night at the Windsor Castle Hotel in Salem. Good Value for money. Next day, I drove from Salem to Karur, branched off to Trichy. The Karur-Trichy road is not good. Drove from Trichy to Nagapattinam, and then on to Velankanni. On the way back, I took a different route, just for fun. Velankanni - Nagapattinam - Cuddalore - Pondicherry - Tindivanam - Vandavasi - Kancheepuram - Vellore - Krishnagiri - Bangalore

From Chennai, always take the East Coast road also know as ECR route. Here is the advantage is of a smooth and safe drive by bus on the the very long stretch of coastal view. You can see the sea almost upto Pondicherry. The bus stops at a a terminal where the food is pretty okay. Travel warning is that take care of your belongings in the bus, don't leave it unattended and don't eat any food items offered by your co passenger no matter how harmless he or she looks. Wear minimum gold jewellery and carry your wallet in your front pocket and women should carry their purses in a their handbags.
