So, after weeks of planning and exploring the place online we decided to go to Mcleodganj which is a fabulous hill town with its name associated to HH the Dalai Lama. We visited in First week of July (I know its a week late) .
Route intended was --
Delhi-Sonepat-Karnal-Ambala-kharar-Nangal-una-Amb-Gaggal-Dharamshala-McleodGanj NH1, NH21, NH503

Two couples in a VW Polo left from Delhi around 7.30PM with a motive to have dinner in Murthal before hitting the highway to HP . We stopped at Murthal and stuffed our bellies with aloo paranthas. I changed to my drive gear (which is my fav floaters) and pushed the paddle around 10.15PM. Soon we were touching 120 K/hr as the road conditions are very good on the highway (NH21) . We crossed Karnal around 10 PM and were approaching Chandigarh around 12.30 AM . We started the navigation by asking a Punjab police cop and he happily told us that take a right from the highway and you will see 'Lightaan (lights) on the road, that road will take you to the highway towards Dharamshala. Not a single vehicle in front or behind us in the dark night full of clouds. It was exciting. But the adventure was yet to start.

On a highway section before Kharar the road was closed and cops did not allow us to go any further. There was no reason given. I recommend be ready for it on any given day. They advised us to take Ludhiana-Phagwara road for further journey. We wanted to make sure about another alternate and the lovely voice of Google maps lady suggested that there may be an alternate. We followed.

The route is NH21A via Pinjore-> Baddi->Nalagarh-> Kiratpur sahib -> Nangal.
It was close to 2.00AM when we entered Baddi (HP).

We reached Nallagarh (the name is too scary to regular bollywood movie watchers) and proceeded back to NH21 and NH 503 later on passing Anandpur Sahib. By the time we reached 'Nangal' and crossed Bhakhra Nangal Dam, We crossed 'Una' and reached 'Ambala' around 4.30AM and stopped for tea. By now I was exhausted and handed over the steering to my friend Neeraj who was well rested with his eyes open for the whole night . The rain God was so angry on us for getting late to Kangra that he lashed out with heavy showers. Nothing was visible 10 feet away and it was scary to drive in the hilly terrain. We again stopped on a tea shop to avoid the rain and relieved us from morning calls. Sensing the rain was adamant we left the tea shop and drove slowly to reach 'Dharamshala' around 7.20AM and eventually reaching McLeodganj around 8.45AM. We called our Deodar villa (which is a decently priced hotel with good view of Dharamshala valley) hotel to confirm the location and reached there around 9.30AM, parking the car in the McLeod parking, near Dalai lama temple and taking a shuttle to the hotel.

Mode of Transport:Train
Nice experience in train. Train was given in Delhi platform late but it reached on time. It's better to carry food as you will not get any food in train. It took more time than normal but as it's an night journey its was ok and we reached Pathankot by 6 am.

Though the hotel is situated in the main road but it is half a km away from main Mcleodganj. Though there are some more hotels have come up but still you have to come down to main town as buzz is there only. The front office is not at all impressive though size of the room is quite big to...more »

Mode of Transport:Flight
Flight arrives mid day and better to pre-book taxi (generally Maruti Alto or Maruti Dzire) from Kangra Airport drive through hills to Dharamshala/McLeodganj.

Taxi charges are flat 700-800 INR. Time to reach McLeodganj is approx 45 minutes from Airport.

There are no arrangements for Tea/Coffee or any snacks at Kangra airport. In case of flight delay, carry some water, and eatables. All meals (on cabin temperature) either by Spice jet or Air India (Turbo prop aircraft) are against payment.

Mode of Transport:Bus
It is a great place to visit and people there are so sweet. I travelled by bus and it was an AC bus. The place consists mostly of foreigners and the food and stay prices are damn cheap as compared to other parts of India like Delhi. It's the kind of place where you can meet new people. I mean the place has everything for a visitor, alcohol is very cheap, food is cheap what else a traveller wants. If you are in a mood for travelling don't think just go.

Nice place to visit with family or friends, good place for a silent and luxurious stay and an awesome place for staying. The route was good and was awesome. We travelled in an SUV and took shorter and better roads, to many tolls but was a good experience.
