There are dozens of wonderful trains that take you from Howrah in Kolkata directly to Santiniketan in ac chair cars or non-ac compartments. It takes around two and a half hours and these trains like Viswabharati Express generally stick to the timings and are not delayed. If one wants to attend either of the two festivals - the Spring Festival at Holi or the Poush Festival in end-December, one would have to book a hotel at least a year in advance because every single room is filled much in advance. But the rates are doubled during festive time. The languages spoken are Bengali, Hindi and English and some dialectical Bengali. Food is mainly non-vegetarian but one can get dosas and idlis if one wishes to partake of veg fare. For spring, one thin warm sweater would do but for Poush Festival, one needs to carry very heavy woolens.

Santiniketan is well connected by Rail & Road. There are many trains available from Sealdah & Howrah. Journey time is just 2 and a half hours. By road journey also takes almost the same time.
