There are 3-4 trains from hyderabad to chennai but plan for evening trains as you will not feel tired in journey as the evening train departures at 7:00 pm from secunderabad and reaches chennai by 8:30 am.

DO NOT TRAVEL IN SLEEPER CLASS IF TRAVELING BY TRAIN, one can reach easily by train (would recommend Delhi Chennai Garib rath, good train at fare 25 percent less for AC 3 tier) or if you want to speed things up catch a flight. Since there is a major language problem, auto in Chennai would try to overcharge but stick to Rs. 100 for 5 to 15kms & Rs. 60 for distances up till 5kms. For distances more than that use public transport or call taxi (clarify at the time of booking that you would pay by the meter). Beaches are a must visit specially Marina Beach in the night.

Mahabalipuram, The city of heritage & Temples.

Mahaballipuram is just about 60 K.M. from Chennai main city. There is regular bus services from central bus stand. Conducted tours are also provided by Tourism dept. Tamilnadu. Local private tour operators also can take you on a day basis with luxurious private cars. Trains are also available collect some information about it before planning for the trip.
