Best way to travel from Jaipur to Vaishno Devi

The distance between Jaipur and Vaishno Devi, is almost 845 km by road. It takes more than 15 hours to reach Katra from Jaipur, by car. The best way to go to Vaishno Devi, is to take a train from Jaipur till Jammu. From Jammu another 50 km is Katra. Katra can be reached by bus or by cab, as there are regular buses and plentiful taxis available at the Jammu station. From Katra, one can choose to walk till the Vaisno Devi temple, which is 14 km away. The train to take from Jaipur, is the AII Jat Express, which leaves Jaipur at 16:35 hours. The fare is Rs. 333 for an adult in the sleeper class.

Jaipur to Vaishno Devi By Bus: Take a direct bus from Jaipur to Vaishno Devi, which takes around 17 hours. Katra bus stand is located at a distance of around 2 km from the base and can be reached on foot. Travelling by bus is tiring and uncomfortable.

Jaipur to Vaishno Devi By Car: Hire a cab from Jaipur to Vaishno Devi, which takes around 17 hours. Charges of cab range from INR12 to INR30 per kilometre, depending upon the type of car. Not recommended as it is expensive as well as tiring.

Jaipur to Vaishno Devi By Flight: Take an indirect flight from Jaipur to Jammu via New Delhi, which takes around 6 hours. From Jammu Airport, the Katra base camp is located 53 km away. You can hire cab, taxi or bus to reach Katra base camp from Jammu Airport. Maa Vaishno Devi Temple is 12 km away from Katra and can be reached on foot or by horse. Helicopter, available from Katra base camp, will drop you close to the Vaishno Devi Shrine. This mode of transport is preferable when travelling with seniors, kids and families.

The base is Katra, which is 3 hours from Jammu town. Jammu is well connected with the rest of the country by train and flight. Night buses from North India, esp Delhi ply regularly as do tourist buses. It is quite some distance from Delhi, and the traffic can get chaotic in katra, so it can be a pain for those who'd wish to drive up. The trip wouldn't be complete if one doesnt check out Patnitop or Jammu as well. Lastly, time your ascent. Lucky ones may get the 2 hour aarti, while others may get stuck waiting for it to finish - and it does snow there at times in winter!!

Keep light woolens handy in summers and heavy ones for winters. The temperature really drops during nights be prepared. Do not trust touts and agents. Try avoiding shopping at private shops. Visit govt run J&K handloom showrooms. Avoid peak summer months and Navratras. Try visiting in winters which is off-season, relatively peaceful and very clean.
