Many people take the train to Jammu followed by a taxi or bus ride to Srinagar. The journey from Jammu to Srinagar is costlier in the summers because the capital is being shifted from Jammu to Srinagar on both the state buses and Sumos. State buses are safer but take more time and are a bit uncomfortable.

Foreign travelers on visas are required to register upon arrival at the airport or to their hotel or houseboat.

Jammu and Kashmir is a great place to visit. We found the car trip from Jammu to Srinagar memorable. The road half way is risky cutting across the mountains, besides Tawi River. The long pine trees near Patnitop area seem to touch the sky. The view of Baghlihar Dam across Chenab from the Highway is ecstatic. After some half way the path is more flat on the onset of the valley. We started from afternoon around 1 Pm and reached Srinagar around 10 Pm.
