I started from Kanyakumari to reach Neyyar Dam in Thiruvananthapuram. I drove down to Kanyakumari from Pune and after driving on some amazing 4 and 6 lanes road till Kanyakumari, this was the first taste of narrow roads. The roads are narrow and you have to cross the city of Nagercoil which was very congested and I faced huge traffic jams there.

One good thing that I noted is that surfacing of roads was very nice. There are no bumps or pot holes on the route. Neyyar Dam has a Crocodile Park, Deer Park and a Lion Safari. Itís a good place to visit if you are with kids of age 3 to 8 yrs. They will be really excited to see the Lion sitting outside their bus.

There was a small garden for children near the dam which was good. From Neyyar Dam to Thiruvananthapuram City the road was good but traffic was worst. A 60 km drive took about 3 hours to reach our destination.

The drive is easy as its just 90 km from my home. Half the route is boring with small roads and traffic. But as we enter Tamil Nadu, the scene changes. The mountains and small ponds and paddy fields on the road sides are a treat for the eyes to watch and it compensates for the early traffic and congested road till then. Normally it takes just around 2 hours with first 1 hour of boring drive and 1 hour of breath taking sceneries.

A wonderful experience, a different route to Kanyakumari. We planned our travel the full day so that we can cover all these areas and reach Kanyakumari by the time of sunset. I started from Trivandrum by 7 Am and reach Chitharal (Jain temple). This is a temple situated at hilly place north to Marthandam (7 KM from Mathandam). It will take almost 1 to 1. 5 hours to complete the visit. Make sure that enough drinking water and snaks with you since it is a remote place and only few shops are available and you may not get anything to your taste. Thereafter proceed to Padmanabhapuram palace. One of the beautiful palace to visit and must spend some time there to see around. You can reach udayagiri fort directly from palace without entering into NH 47. Proceed to Maruthwamala (Marunthuvazh Malai), That too a hilly place, higher and difficult place compared to Chitharal, but worth spending some time climbing up. There after you can plan vattakkottai fort. It is advised to reach Vattakkottai bu 4 ~4. 30 Pm. Another charming place. Make sure you reach Kanyakumari before sunset.

Note: You can visit Mathoot Thottippalam, Chittar-2, Tripparappu and Keeripparai (Make sure Keeripparai opened before you attempt for and not suitable for family but a stunning destination ever I have visited - be aware of dangers in waterfalls, advised to visit with a local person who knows the place). But it needs two days for a comfort travel.

Map for your reference (Use familiar navigation if possible).

We travelled in an AC three tire. The train is so dirty. They didn't have clean blankets and pillows. The toilets were dirty and stinking. The seats were dirty too. It took us two and a half hours to reach Kanyakumari. I would advice you not to travel by this train.

We (I and my wife) decided to take a break from our busy life and have a relaxed and good time in kanyakumari. We booked our hotel room 1 month in advance.
