We decided to travel by car from Kochi to Madurai as we thought it will be more convenient. There are two routes - (1) through Munnar - Theni and the other through Trichur - Govindapuram - Pollachi - Dindigul route. We chose the second option even though the distance is more. Except for about 2-3 km after Trichur (near Kuthiran) the roads are in good condition and road side eateries/wash rooms are available. We took about 71/2 hours to reach Madurai.
We started early morning from Cochin and reached Rameswaram in the afternoon. After the Rameswaram Temple darshan, reached Madurai in the night (we could'nt go Dhanushkodi). Stayed in the hotel near to Temple. Had Meenakshi Temple darshan in the morning. Reached Kodaikanal in the afternoon. Had lunch and sight seeing. Because of rain, we were late when reached Palani at 8 pm. Since the programme was of short period, reached back at Cochin early morning. Used own vehicle, but taken support of a driver. Trip was very enjoyable. I plan to go for similar trips in future also.
