In case travelling by own vehicle, I would say the roads are good to reach Yercaud and within Yercaud some caution needs to be taken care. Hair pin bends are a pleasure to drive and do stop at some of them to get a view of Salem city. Carrying an umbrella is also recommeded as it might rain anytime. Do not forget to carry some wollens in case you are travelling with a kid.

You can reach Salem by train or bus. From Salem Yercaud is 28km..From Salem if you take a bus for Yercaud that is cheap and best, ticket cost is just 11rs. But if you love photography then you must hire a cab(450rs), because it has 20 hairpin bends, and you can really click some good pictures. The road from Salem to Yercaud is awesome, you get to see lots of monkeys...

If you are travelling by vehicle, the ghat roads are excellent for driving. If you are coming in train, get down at Salem station and from there it is a one hour journey. There are plenty of buses to Yercaud, taxis would take anywhere from 550-750 for a drop to Yercaud.
