If you are from Mumbai and planning to visit Lonavala, I suggest you to go by road. Travelling by a car during monsoon is an amazing experience. You will get to see such amazingly beautiful mountains covered with fog and waterfalls everywhere. The ghats are simply outstanding to watch during monsoons. Driving through the zig zag ghats and seeing the mountains covered fog gives you an amazing high feeling. If you are into bikes then I suggest to visit Lonavala by bike only in non-monsoons.
I travelled to Lonavala by my own car. It was really great and the shortest route is to take Mumbai Pune Express Highway. The best time is to stay overnight so that you reach and relax one day in the resort. Next day morning you can check-out and do the sightseeing.
