Have tripped many places in Maharashtra for more than 6000-75000kms in car, obvioulsy mahableshwar for 6-7 times total from both routes Personally would prefer to drive via ghat)-Mahableshwar route with 245-250kms with time saving, huge toll tax savings but obvioulsy without predicting traffic stalls especially before approaching Mangoan junction, Its an awesome route, swift at times, well maintained and importantly requires two way highway driving experience . Tackling vehicular traffic, stalls on NH-17 route solely depends on skilled car driving, judgement and experience. On going trucks, trailers & tankers can easily reduce average speed on NH17 till poladpur, one has to be very watchful and patient while driving on this route. One can easily reach in 6hrs by taking 2 halts of 30mins(Pali) & 15 mins(poladpur). Toughest challenge on this route is ascending narrow zig zag bents of Ambenali ghat, on coming vehicle movement is unpredictable and it will seem to be a never ending ghat for newbie driver. Swift and experienced drivers can ascend ghat in 50-60 mins, else would be cumbersome and time taking for new driver 75-90 mins Ideal tour & halts map would be time : 6 - 6. 5hrs max @ 250Kms ). Toll tax appx : 35(Vashi)+140 (at Khalapur toll) + Mahableshwar Entry charges(100). Mumbai - Mahad temple( khopoli) or Pali (on SH92) [Halt] - Wakan on ghat-Mahableshwar. Other route is much easiest, safest, convenient but a bit longer by 30-35kms ( so not much time efficient) and have to pay huge toll taxes ( on NH4 highway) one has to pay toll at Vashi(35), 238 for Express highway till Pune, Shivapur toll (70) plus entry charges. Traffic spots causing delays Khandala ghat, Wakad-Katraj bypass highway due to nos of vehicular traffic, toll tax barrier traffic 5-10 mins downtime (Shivapur)-Steep incline one way route of Khambataki ghat after Shirwal-Khandala though with average nos of vehicles plying on it. Surur to wai 12kms is swift to cover, Wai to Mahableshwar via Parsarni ghat- panchagani takes 1 hrs for sure. One may feel Mahableshwar Lonavala -Katraj is quickest and time saving, but its significantly time consuming as other route. But always advisable for newbie drivers as its quick, convenient and safest. Also, it has one sight seeing Ganpati temple @ Wai on this route which is recommended. Sometimes, Bad luck would be getting 2-5hrs traffic snarls due to stranded Expressway approaching Khandala -Lonavala Ghat. Tour map & halts (Travel time : 6-6. 5hrs max @ 285kms). Mumbai- Khopoli or Dehuroad toll plaza(halt 30 mins)-.

We had taken Pune Expressway route for Mahableshwar from Mumbai. The Pune Expressway has superb roads. We had traveled in our own car. From Pune Expressway we had taken Satara road. On this route Panchgani comes first and then Mahabaleshwar. This is the best route to go to Mahabaleshwar. There are food mall at Lonavala and also after you cross Lonavala. After Pune Expressway ends the road till Panchgani is bit slower due to lots of vehicular movement. Before Panchgani there is 20-25 kms of Ghat area. The journey was enjoyable on this route.

The drive from Mumbai was smooth, the road between Mumbai Pune expy and Pune -Bangalore expy is not very good.

If you are not going to stay in Panchgani they DO NOT pay any toll/tax to the Municipality guys demanding it in Panchgani.

It took us around 5 1/2 hours one way in the morning and reached just in time for lunch.

We took Mumbai-Pune Express-Wai-Panchgani route. We started at 6am and reach at 12.30Pm which include 45 minutes halt for breakfast. The road was excellent though we had to pay toll of around Rs 500/-. While coming back, we took Panchgani-NH4-Panvel-Mumbai route, where we paid toll of only Rs.200/- The road was also very good.

I think one should take the second route while going to Panchgani/Mahabaleshwar. I also strongly advise not to take Mumbai-Mahad route which is very narrow and risky. The food in Mahabaleshwar is average and very costly. For 3 person, the average food cost is Rs.1500-2000 per day.

For local seller in Mahabaleshwar, tourist are "bakra" for them. I think during peak season, Singapore will be cheaper then Mahabaleshwar. Govt should take initiative to rationalise food and staying cost in Mahabaleshwar or the tourist should boycott Mahabaleshwar till food and staying cost is not rationalise.

The road was smooth as butter, particularly Mumbai-Pune expressway stretch.

But once you cross Pune and enter AH-47/NH4, driving on the highway demands a bit more skill and concentration because of all of the villages that come on the way. Villagers tend to cross the road without looking out for oncoming cars. Trucks and buses will mow you down (not literally though!! They will only tail you very closely and blow their horns like crazy), if you are driving slower than they are not allowing them to pass.

But apart from these, the drive is a real nice one. You can enjoy it with your friends and family, along with some loud music and food.

Note: Avoid drink and drive situations. Cheers and happy driving!!!
