We had taken Pune Expressway route for Mahableshwar from Mumbai. The Pune Expressway has superb roads. We had traveled in our own car. From Pune Expressway we had taken Satara road. On this route Panchgani comes first and then Mahabaleshwar. This is the best route to go to Mahabaleshwar. There are food mall at Lonavala and also after you cross Lonavala. After Pune Expressway ends the road till Panchgani is bit slower due to lots of vehicular movement. Before Panchgani there is 20-25 kms of Ghat area. The journey was enjoyable on this route.
The drive from Mumbai was smooth, the road between Mumbai Pune expy and Pune -Bangalore expy is not very good.
If you are not going to stay in Panchgani they DO NOT pay any toll/tax to the Municipality guys demanding it in Panchgani.
It took us around 5 1/2 hours one way in the morning and reached just in time for lunch.
This route has:
Mumbai - Pune Expy and NH4

We took Mumbai-Pune Express-Wai-Panchgani route. We started at 6am and reach at 12.30Pm which include 45 minutes halt for breakfast. The road was excellent though we had to pay toll of around Rs 500/-. While coming back, we took Panchgani-NH4-Panvel-Mumbai route, where we paid toll of only Rs.200/- The road was also very good.
I think one should take the second route while going to Panchgani/Mahabaleshwar. I also strongly advise not to take Mumbai-Mahad route which is very narrow and risky. The food in Mahabaleshwar is average and very costly. For 3 person, the average food cost is Rs.1500-2000 per day.
For local seller in Mahabaleshwar, tourist are "bakra" for them. I think during peak season, Singapore will be cheaper then Mahabaleshwar. Govt should take initiative to rationalise food and staying cost in Mahabaleshwar or the tourist should boycott Mahabaleshwar till food and staying cost is not rationalise.

Arthurs seat and Lingmala fall was excellent experience. However, one should choose monsoon to visit falls. In March, the day is hot while evening/night is cold. One can visit sites only after 5PM. I advise travellers to visit the destination only during winter or monsoon. Apart from costly...more »
The road was smooth as butter, particularly Mumbai-Pune expressway stretch.
But once you cross Pune and enter AH-47/NH4, driving on the highway demands a bit more skill and concentration because of all of the villages that come on the way. Villagers tend to cross the road without looking out for oncoming cars. Trucks and buses will mow you down (not literally though!! They will only tail you very closely and blow their horns like crazy), if you are driving slower than they are not allowing them to pass.
But apart from these, the drive is a real nice one. You can enjoy it with your friends and family, along with some loud music and food.
Note: Avoid drink and drive situations. Cheers and happy driving!!!
We planned for 3 day visit. One day in Panchgani and 2 days in Mahabaleshwar. We started by 5.30AM from Mumbai (Central Line) to avoid city traffic. Though NH17 also connects, prefer M-P expressway and then NH4 as roads are very good. Recently, overlaying has been done on NH4. You will definitely enjoy smooth drive and once you touch Satara district, you will pass through full greenery and ghats towards Panchgani. Travel during monsoon is quite risky.
Visit just after monsoon or in Dec/Jan as this is strawberry ripening season and almost all roads in Mahabaleshwar & Panchgani are filled with deep red fresh strawberries.
