Pune To Tarkarli

I finalized the route based on internet research of various travelogues and blogs and also based on discussions with first hand travellers to Tarkarli and locals. Travelling by this route, one will exit Maharashtra in to Karnataka around Nipani and after 35-40 KM get back in to Maharashtra around Gadhinglaj / Azara. I am glad I took the route mentioned above. For one, the entire route does not have much traffic and the road is good for the most part. I strongly recommend this route for travellers by road from Pune to Tarkarli and back. There are some other routes too like via Gagan-bawda from Kolhapur through Fonda Ghat or via Mahabaleshwar through Mumbai-Goa highway. I was told that both these routes has heavy traffic and not very scenic.

if leaving from Pune, start very early in the morning as the distance from kolhapur via gaganbawda is a bit long.Taking your own vehicle is a recommended option. One must have 3-4 days onlly for tarkarli to enjoy the unexplored beauty of malvan area.

One cannot move around without a vehicle, though there are local buses availbale as well as jeeps & autos, however, one would enjoy more if one had own conveyance. Road are good right from Mumbai till Tarkarli. Roadside food on the way is ok. Avoid having tea onroute or even in Tarkarli as its heaped with sugar and no amount of telling them to reduce helps. One can always ask for sugarless tea and then add as per ones liking.

We drove down down to Tarkarli and it took us 12 hrs from Mumbai on the NH 17. From Kasal take a right on the SH 108 and head 50 kms down to Malvan. Lovely roads to drive on so no worries of bumpy rides.
