We were able to see snowfall on the way in the month of June. It was an amazing experience. The roads are very risky to drive on and travelling at night is definitely not recommended. Landslides are a frequent occurrence and one might need help from a passer-by car in case of an emergency. However, the overall scenic view is amazing.

Being a travel savvy person, I chose to travel from Srinagar to Leh by road along with my family and children during the month of September. The journey was very exciting and adventurous due to various road conditions on the way. As a regular practice the road which opens during the month of May is closed by 1st October as snowfall starts. The road up to Kargil is narrow and was not in good conditions. But the local driver who regularly traverse had no problem navigating. There were traffic problem on the way because of drivers not used to the driving on this road with the heavy vehicles also traversing. Before undertaking the journey, one should see the various videos available on the net for their information.

It is important one should carry proper food for their en-route consumption as good restaurants are not available en-route. Booking a hotel for night stay at Kargil is a must as everybody travelling both ways will rest at Kargil for their onward journey the next day. Carrying warm clothing is compulsory as climate may turn adverse anytime.

The road between Kargil and Leh is good and very good as you near Leh. Those travelling by car/sedan/suv should prepare themselves for photographic stops which will be abundant but should not waste more time as considering the destination to reach before dark.

Road journey helps you acclimate to the high altitude one will be reaching slowly. While catching up with the sightseeing on the way, one should continue with the regular sightseeing programs after reaching lay the following day because it will be more comfortable.

One can choose to fly back on their return journey but those who have time can travel to Manali by Leh - Manali Road which will be more exciting.

Started early from Srinagar, we have been stopped by local police authority as Amarnath Yatra was also scheduled on same date. It was our hard time to convince authority that we are not Amarnath Yatri but going to Leh via Kargil. On the way it was very scenic and beautiful place has come where we have stopped and enjoy. Our driver tells that you have to cross Zozila Pass before 15 hours other wise you have to stay at Sonmarg. We have started our journey to Kargil via Zozilla Pass and draws. To cross Zozilla is also unique experience as rain has made earth wet and tyres are slipping out. Way to Kargil we have seen Kargil war memorial and passing through dress which is world coldest inhabited area. Choosing journey by road instead of air is a lifetime experience. Also you have time to make your self slowly adjust at high altitude and may not create health problem, which is otherwise have high chance of breathing problem.

The travel to Leh by car was really an excellent Idea. We travelled to Srinagar by plane and then took taxi for Leh. We reached Leh crossing Sonmarg, Zojilla, Kargil and drass. Road for Zojilla is very rough. We enjoyed the scenic beauty all the way. Take rest in Kargil and continue your journey to heaven the next day by early morning.
