You can reach Allepey by road from Cochin and board the houseboat from there. They'll drop you back at the boarding point if you want to or else in a completely different location depending upon your schedule. Do carry light clothes. Especially cotton shirts, tops and lowers. Those are comfortable. Carry your camera and chargers. Phones do work so take your charger along. You can also carry some movie CDs/DVDs as most of the houseboats have TV sets with DVD players. Most important of all, don't forget MOSQUITO REPELLANTS, especially the creams/gels. There's a huge variety available in the market these days. Carry snacks, eatables, toiletteries as well. Carrying some bottles of mineral water would also help. Most of the houseboats have these too. But yes, carry your booze along. You wont get anything else but 'Toddy' and Beer.

We can take a car, people who don't wanna travel you can take a Bus or train.. don't worry about the local travel the auto guys and the taxi guys are very friendly there nice experience.

Take a train to Alleppey. Inform your houseboat operator regarding your train number and you will be picked up for a nominal fare depending on the number of people. Nearest airport will be either cochin or Trivandrum. Dont try to reach the houseboat on your own transport as you will never know the exact location as all canals (backwaters) look the same. Try to avoid peak summer & rainy season as this will spoil the cruise. Make sure your houseboat has mosquito repellant. Ask your captain to pull down the canvas in front of the boat before the mosquitoes gain an unwelcomed entry. Ask your captain for a chance to steer the houseboat. Even an ace (car) driver would love to cruise and lead a ship through the backwaters:) If you are not too concerned about an Airconditioner, then stick to the fans, as the AC (if applicable) is only from 9PM to 6AM. if you cut down on AC, then you could save upto 1000 INR per room.
