We left Bangalore at 3 pm on Friday. We got a little lucky because of the all-India strike on Friday. The roads were empty and we exited Bangalore within about 40 minutes. Having crossed Mahadevpura, we joined the Bangalore-Tirupati highway, which is a very good road. The road condition is superb. There are lots of petrol pumps and restaurants on the way, which is really convenient even if you travel with elderly people or little kids. After leaving Bangalore, the route bypasses Kolar and Hoskote before crossing over from Karnataka to AP. There are 3 toll posts before exiting Karnataka, where you pay Rs. 16, Rs. 64 and Rs. 24 respectively. This road lasts approximately 80 km after exiting Bangalore, and this stretch is a breeze. After leaving home, we covered the first 100 km in a little over an hour. After entering AP though, the road becomes just 1 lane each way, and this slows down the average speed. Even though the road is in good condition, the truck traffic on this road doesn't allow you to go too fast. There are a few unannounced speed breakers which you need to lookout for. The traffic police have also installed barriers at some points, which again come quite unexpectedly, requiring you to brake suddenly quite a few times.
Overall, the route is nice. We covered the 260 km to our hotel in just under 5 hours, including a 30 min snack break, and a couple of other halts when our kid had some motion sickness. On the way back, we took about 30 mins longer, thanks to the heavier traffic. All said and done, the drive was much more peacful, and the road condition a lot better than the Mysore road.

I have stayed with Keys at Shirdi and Pune before this, and both those experiences were very good. Because of good prior experience, I did not give a second thought when I booked our rooms at the Keys Hotel in Tirupati. The location itself is pretty good. The hotel is just about 3-4 km from the...more »

Bangalore -Tirumala (Tirupathi) was a two day trip. 615 km and we had loads of fun.

I recently did the Bangalore - Tirupathi Vari Temple -> Bangalore trip and here's the travelogue.

Preface
This has been pending from past 5 years at least and we have not been able to decide or had the courage to go to Tirumala (Tirupathi) as were scared of the long queues as described by fellow friends etc. But this time we decided, lets do it and we did it :)

Route taken
Took Bangalore- K.R.Puram Bridge- Hoskote- Kolar- Chittor-Palamner- irupathi-Tirumala. (Thanks to Mukesh from TAI).

Did all the research on the route and downloaded the same on the iPod Touch so that we can follow the guidelines. Had Google Maps connection all the way but did not really use it much as the route was pretty much simple and straight.

Packed some clothes for a changeover at Tirumala and carried some food stuff etc for kids as we were not very sure on what we will get on the way. But as fellow TAI'ns suggested we were expecting to get some South Indian snacks on the way at-least.

Started from Bangalore at 6:30 am from South Bangalore via Bannerghatta Road- Koramangala- Indranagar- Old Madras Road- K.R.Puram Bridge- Hoskote- Kolar- Chittor- Palamner- Tirupathi- Tirumala.

Mode of Transport:Train
The distance by train is more than road but train journey is cheaper. Being a fast passenger offers only Non-AC reserved accommodation and is comfortable overnighter leaving Bangalore at 20:30 hrs and reaching at 5:30 hrs in the morning. Provides a convenient way to sleep and get fresh for making the darshan next day morning. As its a Fast Passenger category train, the fare works out to be just about Rs.175/- per head for the comfort provided for the section. On weekends the train tends to be more crowded but TTE and RPF ensure that only genuine reserved passengers are present in the reserved sleeper coaches .

Mode of Transport:Bus
KSRTC has both AC and Non AC buses, they have a good name and crew members develop a good rapo with travellers. Buses are in very good condition and are comfortable. They are always on time and do reach on time. They do not rash drive. Timely breaks are given in good hotels for refreshments. You can book on line KSRTC buses and show sms as ticket, must carry a copy of id proof and show the sms ticket to the conductor, go green no paper.
