The distance between Trichy and Chennai is 325 km. It takes a little more than five and half hours, to reach Chennai, from Trichy. The route is as follows: Trichy – Srirangam – Perambalur – Veppur – Asanur – Ulundurpettai Villupuram – Vikravandi – Tindivanam – Melmaruvathur – Madurantakam – Chengalpattu – Maraimalai Nagar (Ford factory) – Kattankolathur – Guduvancheri – Otteri – Vandalur – Perungalathur – Tambaram – Chennai. The road at Villupuram, is not well maintained; and there is a railway crossing at Ulundurpettai, which can take some time to cross. But Ulunderpetti has some good restaurants, where one can have some very decent meals.

DO NOT TRAVEL IN SLEEPER CLASS IF TRAVELING BY TRAIN, one can reach easily by train (would recommend Delhi Chennai Garib rath, good train at fare 25 percent less for AC 3 tier) or if you want to speed things up catch a flight. Since there is a major language problem, auto in Chennai would try to overcharge but stick to Rs. 100 for 5 to 15kms & Rs. 60 for distances up till 5kms. For distances more than that use public transport or call taxi (clarify at the time of booking that you would pay by the meter). Beaches are a must visit specially Marina Beach in the night.

Mahaballipuram is just about 60 K.M. from Chennai main city. There is regular bus services from central bus stand. Conducted tours are also provided by Tourism dept. Tamilnadu. Local private tour operators also can take you on a day basis with luxurious private cars. Trains are also available collect some information about it before planning for the trip.
