Great place to spend for a weekend ...
Avoid Pondy during the summer months. It usually gets too hot for comfort. Stick to the French quarter of the town. It is certainly better than the other side, which is nothing but a typical dirty small Indian town. There are lots of excellent eateries, serving mostly Continental fares (to cater to the palates of the foreigners who can be seen swarming are all over the place!!). Check out the many non-descript and hidden beaches along the coastline of Pondy. They will be refreshingly good. Be warned about the locals and foreigners who are peddling drugs/women etc.

The sands, stones and sun of Pondy
You can reach Pondicherry by taking an ECR Volvo(recommended) or any other AC bus from CMBT Bus Terminus at Chennai. Never take up an auto rickshaw wala on his offer unless its for a fixed destination as they will change the cost if you move even a 100 meters away from the initial destination. They are untrustworthy and its better to take buses for travelling in Chennai before reaching Pondicherry. I would advise making an online booking for a hotel reservation before reaching, thereby having a reservation before hand which saves you the trouble of searching for a hotel(this is especially advised during peak seasons and during festival period)
