Established in 1814 the Kolkata Indian Museum is the largest museum of the country. The museum was founded by a botanist from Denmark, Dr. Nathaniel Wallich. There are over 60 galleries in the museum that has on display several artefacts and prehistoric objects. All the exhibits can be broadly divided into categories like Geological, Anthropological, Artistic, Archaeological, Zoological and Industrial items.

The main attractions of the museum are the fossils of extinct animals and the Egyptian mummy. The Egyptian Mummy is more than 4000 years old. The Indian Museum also has on display a pot containing the ashes of Lord Buddha.

Works of art from all parts of the world, paintings of eminent artists, pre-historic relics from Mohenjo-Daro, Harappa and Bihar and a huge collection of coins and stones are among the things that are on display here.

There are even gold coins belonging to the 5th century BC from the time of Samudragupta, Akbar and Jahangir. English speaking guides explain each section and every item on display thoroughly. A small store inside the museum puts on sale a host of items that can be picked up as a souvenir.

Welcome To Indian Museum
The history of the origin and the growth of the Indian Museum is one of the remarkable events towards the development of heritage and culture of India.
Founded in 1814 at the cradle of the Asiatic Society of Bengal (at the present building of the Asiatic Society, 1 Park Street, Kolkata), Indian Museum is the earliest and the largest multipurpose Museum not only in the Indian subcontinent but also in the Asia-Pacific region of the world.
With the foundation of Indian Museum in 1814, the Museum movement started rolling in India and through the years from then, got a new fillip and great momentum. Since then, it has so magnificently developed and culminated into the fruitful existence of more than 400 museums in the country.
The movement, which was started in 1814, in fact was the beginning of a significant epoch initiating the sociocultural and scientific achievements of the country. It is otherwise considered as the beginning of the modernity and the end of medieval era.

I visited Indian Museum, Kolkata many times. Now a days it has been reformed and decorated in a new and beautiful way. There are many ancient sculptures. A lot of previous things made out of the Trunk of Elephant say like different commodities used by the Kings of then India. Not to mention there are a lot of living fossils which are decorated in a nice and catching way.

One can use Camera and take the pictures of not only the excellent informative equipments but one can enjoy the calm and beautiful environment there.

"Splendid collection"

  • 6.5/7

This historic Indian museum, founded in 1814, is still the largest museum in India and has rare collections of antiques, armour, coins, ornaments, fossils, skeletons, Egyptian mummy, the Ashoka Pillar and Mughal paintings. The exhibit halls of Egyptian culture are a nice one to visit, On the part of flora and fauna, there are enclosures for birds found in India, and there is another for aquatic life. The place is very simple, calm and rich. Geological stones, variety of birds, animals etc. Was amazed at the sheer variety the museum maintains. This multi-purpose Institution with multidisciplinary activities has six sections comprising thirty five galleries of cultural and scientific artifacts namely Art, Archaeology, Anthropology, Geology, Zoology and Economic Botany. The museum building is massive and the gardens are decent. However, the building requires a lot of maintenance, particularly indoors. Lighting of the galleries is inadequate, exhibits missing proper descriptions, still this museum is highly recommended to spend a day to view the huge collections portraying Indian history and also natural history.

There are many sections. All look very fascinating. It is a must visit if you have curious kids with you. We visited on 1st April. Many good sections were closed, for no reason. But whatever we saw was worth. If they manage it well, this can become must visit place in Kolkata.

"Collection of archaeological, historical items"

I visited the Indian Museum, Kolkata (Jadughar) in local language on 20. 04. 2015. It has very good collection of many historical items like coins, stone-woodwork dating back B. C. Time. The fee for Indian tourist is Rs. 10/- only. Cameras are allowed for a fee of Rs. 50/-. Timings are 10 am to 5 pm. Only one or two sections are air conditioned. The mummies and the procedure of mummification, and stuffed animal section are interesting. The different sections are based on some theme. A must see if one is in Kolkata.

The Indian museum situated at Kolkata is one of the must visit historical monument of India. It has a wide collection of ancient artifacts that speaks of volumes of history of our nation. The site can be used as an educational picnic spot for schoolchildren. It would also leverage our country's image among foreign people by speaking about rich history of our country.
