| Safaris may just be
the next big thing on the itineraries of tourists
visiting Kashmir as the state's tourism department
has planned to introduce jungle safaris, trekking
and nature camps in a bid to revive tourism in Kashmir.
These steps could be seen as innovative measures
to explore the abundance of adventure in the valley
amongst visiting tourists. |
| |
 |
|
As
per the Joint director for Tourism, Kashmir,
several camps and nature treks were being
set up in order to conduct the safaris. According
to tourism officials, the safaris would be
introduced in the valley in a year. |
|
For the jungle safaris, the tourists will be visiting
the Dachigam National Park in Srinagar, which is
spread over an area of 140 sq. kms and it’s
also home to the endangered Hangul species of deer
in the country. Dachigam is also home to other wildlife
such as the black and brown bear, musk deer, and
leopards. This place is also a birdwatcher’s
paradise as there are a large number of migratory
birds found here such as the Himalayan monals, cinnamon
sparrows, black bulbuls, woodpeckers, minivets,
pygmy owlets, babblers, black-and-yellow grosbeaks,
Himalayan griffons etc. There is a Trout fish farm
here as well. It is a huge natural reserve which
requires permissions from the Wildlife Authorities
for exploration. The dense forests of Dachigam offer
a brilliant view along with a Glacier fed rivulet
flowing right through the middle. |

|
|
 |
|
The
best months for visiting Dachigam are between
the months of May and August in summer and
between September and December in winter.
Two lodges and rest houses in the sanctuary
are available for accommodation. For those
staying in Srinagar, hotels and houseboats
(known locally as Shikaras) are available |
|
in plenty. Hire a houseboat if you are truly looking to
capture the beauty of Kashmir as they are intricately
designed and elaborate. They also provide the best of
comforts and services to the guests as they are well furnished
and spacious. |
