It\'s absolutely amazing when you realise that this place is only around 1.5-2 hours from Bhimtal - a half hour drive (13 Kms on the Padampuri road up to Matial), and then 1-1.5 hours walk up the hill. And tough or taxing as the climb may seem, it\'s well worth the effort. Steve Lall and his family (wife Parvati, daughter Nandini and dogs Dhannu, Kaali, Bhonu nad others), the owners of the estate, make you feel completely at home, right from their first hello and up to their last goodbye. If you\'re looking for some peace and quiet, well, it doesn\'t get any more peaceful and quieter than this! If you\'re looking for greenery, well, this is as green as it gets! And if you\'re looking to walk in the hills, well then, 95 acres of thick, forested hills should be quite sufficient! And the dogs would be only too happy to give you company, if you\'re an animal lover. In the three days that i spent there, i walked the length and breadth of the estate, and watched the sun rise and set from different points all over the estate. A climb up to the ridge to catch the sunrise is a must-do. Set out early (one of their staff will be only too happy to guide you) in the morning, carry sandwiches and tea and, after watching the sunrise, walk along the ridge. stop wherever you\'d like and have a breakfast picnic, overlooking the villages down below. In the distance, you can see Bhimtal and Haldwani below you. Come back to the house by another route, and you might be lucky enough to see some animals. The cottages are pretty, and each one is some distance away from the rest, giving oyu enough privacy. And each cottage has a dedicated staff, just a call or a shout away. Go and spend some time there, if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle. You\'ll thank yourself for it.

A great place to escape to, where you really are away from the madness of city life. No phones or television or room service, but thats definately a positive. The surrounding woods are great to walk around, the weather great and the views - incredible. The walk up to the estate is a bit steep, but well worth the effort once you`re there. The food - not the room service option, but its good wholesome tasty stuff, cooked by the cottage caretakers.

Best Experience: great walks, especially the one up to the ridge- and some great views up there.

Worst Experience: you could catch some leeches while walking around during the monsoons... but thats part of the outdoor experience and not much to worry about

Very convenient location with a 1.5 hr drive from Kathgodam after an overnight train ride. The resort is not touristy and is a great relief to reach after an hours worth of steep climb from the motorable road. Service is good and so is the food. The high point is the owners Steve Lall and Parvati who treat guests more like guests at their own home.

very relaxing weekend getaway. the best part is that only true nature-enthusiasts come here as the trek from the car-park to the resort is almost an hour. chill in the cottage soaking in the beautiful view!

Best Experience: trek to the ridge....from where one can see the valley below.

Worst Experience: the small pests (leech) that are found everywhere in the monsoons. they suck on ur blood without any warning ..... so u have to be careful when u walk in the forest.

A hideaway to beat all others.

Best Experience: Lal, the \'junglee environmentalist\', is an interesting storyteller. The cottages are islands of privacy, far enough from each other for solitude and close enough to banish loneliness. The view from the top is tantalising. As is the prospect of bumping into a Victorian ghost by the dead of night. Best of all, it\'s like being in a time warp... time as a concept doesn\'t exist here. Just slow sunrises, lazy rambles in the forest and evenings that can go on for ever.

Worst Experience: The climb up is daunting. Paradoxically enough, it\'s also why Jilling\'s claim as \'the last resort\' still holds true. And the water is cold enough to chill the marrow.
