Jodhpur food, sight-seeing and shopping options
Umaid Bhawan is the palace of the king of Udaipur. Nice-looking but that’s as far as we could get. There is only a small area of the palace that is available to visitors. Although the limited area gives one a good idea of the spaciousness and grandeur of the palace, my companions were quite disappointed with the limited area available for sightseeing. Most other palaces in Rajasthan allow a much wider access to the interiors. Umaid Bhawan is supposed to have a nice luxurious restaurant as part of the palace premises. However, the restaurant turned out to be a little more luxurious than we had bargained for. Entry charge is Rs.2,500 per head!!! Can you believe it? And this is only the entry charge I am talking of, not the food cost. In short, Umaid Bhawan is out of reach of the common man.
Another area of interest is Balsamman which is a lake-side restaurant. Good surroundings and peaceful atmosphere. We were also advised to go to Osian which comprised of sand dunes. The proud locals of Jodhpur insisted that it was as good as Jaisalmer. However, the heat was unbearable and the idea of going to Osian did not appeal despite the high recommendations.
We did visit the Mehrangarh fort. Nice fort but large. If you ever have to walk in the heat of Rajasthan, you will understand the ‘but large’ comment. We liked what we saw but couldn’t cover the entire area. Apparently, there is one section of the fort that sells knick-knacks both food and non-food which we unfortunately missed but which I was told is good fun to visit.
