I must congratulate Anil and Anju for proving that nature, wildlife and people can coexist. Though the resort is in the jungle (when I say jungle, read as JUNGLE), there is every care taken to minimize the human footprint around the resort. There are strict rules in terms of noise levels and they don't allow folks not interested in wildlife to stay there . Very relaxed atmosphere, fantastic staff with Manu and Darshan taking care of everything. There are 3 activities you must try 1. Drive and campfire at night 2. Jungle awareness trek 3. JLR safari in Nagarahole . Regarding the rooms, the photos in the website does not do any justice to the place. Rooms are much better than what is shown in their website. The best option would be to take the all meals and activities package, this way you can enjoy the lovely Kerala cuisine as well.
This was our last stop before flying back, the only regret we have is that we didn't spend enough days in this wonderful wildlife abode. The 2 nights we spent was spent watching animals inside the retreat, or doing wildlife safaris or taking part in some of those excellent activities offered by the retreat. The staff was just so kind, we were so well looked after. The cook was amazing, and considering the remote location, he still managed to dish out excellent meals right through our stay. We had an excellent campfire with Anil, his stories were mesmerising, and having him with us for the wildlife safari was perhaps the only reason why we saw the Tiger hidden in the bush. A special thanks to Anju for assisting with our itinerary and making our stay comfortable.
The location of the hotel was average. The appearance of the hotel was nice. The hotel building was made up of wooden. The destination of the hotel was excellent. There was no delay in check in and checkout in the hotel. The hotel were behaved friendly. There was no room facility in the hotel. The food was not tasty in the hotel. The activity was not available in the hotel. I had visited this hotel with my friends for personal trip. I had booked the room by online. The WiFi facility was not provided. The garden and parking facility was available. The overall experience was very good. I would suggest this hotel to improve the room service, swimming pool and provide WiFi facility.
Where is the best place to see wildlife in Kerala? Read on. The answer to that question is Jungle Retreat Wayanad in Kerala . The location is mesmerizing and we saw elephants and other animals freely roaming around in the fields ahead. The electric fencing kept the animals on the other side and humans on this . We chose the villa as we were a group on 6, all of us stayed under the same roof and the villa being located close to the jungle, is a great option for a large-ish group . The service is great and we felt completely at home, we were treated as friends, not just guests . This is a great place for wildlife lovers, and you will enjoy it if you are not the stuck-up kind.
Need a private vehicle. May encounter traffic jams but not too heavy or long. Use only Highways and avoid interior Google roads. Carry food as nothing us available. Plastic bottles are not allowed inside the island. Security guys are absolutely foolish, brainless and arrogant and think they are protecting the waters from Somalian pirates (Indian citizens).
There are places that will stick with you even after you check out, one such is the Jungle Retreat Wayanad. The staff and the service they provide is just so personal and outstanding. The cook is another superstar there, tasty Indian cuisine at its best Nothing to beat the location, it is surrounded by beautiful jungle on all sides and we had ample wildlife sightings from our room itself. Now that is priceless! We took the activities package and it covered treks, safaris, camp fire and a visit to a jungle stream.
This was our second visit, it was better than the first. The hospitality along with the wildlife sightings make JRW special. We really enjoyed the food, the trek and the safari was excellent as usual. Thanks to holiday IQ to make such a wonderful memory to cherish all the time.
We booked a room with Jungle Retreat a month back on TravelGuru and paid the full price for two nights. It was one of the biggest mistakes I have made recently since I didn't expect to be treated the way we were. My husband hurt his leg the day before we were supposed to get there and could not walk. The cancellation policy said that we could lose almost all the money (You might be charged up to the full cost of stay (including taxes & service charge) if you do not check-in to the hotel) if we didn't cancel by Aug 4 for a September 3 travel so to be fair we should have been warned. What I didn't expect was the horrible attitude of Ms. Anju (Management of Jungle Retreat) whom we spoke to. Between getting my husband's leg attended to, we tried to call her and check if anything can be done to refund at least some money. I had low hopes but I have faced situations before where people have been at least cooperative in case of an emergency. A friend of mine had his full money refunded when he faced an emergency. The hotel staff ensured that they refunded the money in spite of the cancellation policy. But not Ms. Anju. She seemed concerned only with getting the money. Since the travel site had released the money to the resort she had the sole power and she used it by dismissing us and asking us to talk to the travel company and not to bother her. On top of that, she had a hard tone from the start and said things like. "You didn't call us when you booked so why are you calling us now? ". "If you had booked with us I could have done something". "I have told the travel company if I get a replacement booking then only I can do something". I admit that I may have appeared angry when I was talking to her but she made no attempt to understand that we were facing a real emergency. To that her reply was "I do not wish to have this unpleasant conversation with you". Glad they know what providing good service means. We didn't get any of our money back in the end, which I can still understand since we made the booking with the cancellation policy in place. But what didn't go down well with us was the way the Anju dismissed a valid case without even making an attempt to check the facts, while being very high handed about it. I am just sorry I lost money to a place that is run by people like her. What they seem to not be aware of that they may own/run a resort but people save for their vacations and even a little would have gone a long way. It may be a very beautiful place (not that I will ever go there after what happened) but our experience with the management was very ugly.
We have been to many wildlife resorts in India and around the world, but one refreshing thing we noticed in jungle retreat is that wildlife comes first more than anything else. What I mean is, they have zero tolerance to anything that disturbs nature and wildlife and it is clear that they are not running it purely for money. There were elephants in the meadows and they looked very comfortable grazing there, and the guests were told to keep completely silent, great experience seeing the gentle giants grazing peacefully in the presence of humans, since we kept a safe distance and didn't do anything to get them disturbed. The theme is very wildlife centric with safaris arranged in Tholapetty and Nagarhole. We took JLR safari from Jungle Retreat at a fraction of what you'd pay if you went directly with Jungle Lodges, yes, we had a Tiger sighting as well. But Jungle Retreat Wayanad is more than just a place for Tiger sightings, I think it is a living proof of responsible tourism, clear example of nature and humans coexisting without conflict.
How can someone not fall in love with Kerala is just beyond me. If you ever go to Kerala, you must try jungle retreat Wayanad. 6 of us, all girls decided to take a break from our IT lives, we wanted to go somewhere remote, safe and very private. It is purely by coincidence that we found jungle retreat online. That was the best decision we ever made . Anju the young host is also from the IT world in Bangalore and hats off to her for taking a break from her IT life and pursuing her dreams. She treated us friends and it felt as though we have known her/them for years !. The location is amazing and though we are not very hardcore animal lovers, we still enjoyed the total peace and calmness of the forests where the resort was situated . The food was just awesome, the other staff was just so helpful and amazing . With the limited number of rooms they have and the policy of not taking noisy bachelors ensured that we had complete privacy !. We also talked to Anil, who is Anju's other half, the way he explains jungle stuff is just so captivating, he is one amazing story teller and we were soon transformed to kids listening to stories !!. One evening the heavens opened up and sitting in the balcony of our 2 bedroom villa, watching the rain fall across the grasslands, it felt that we were the only ones in God's green earth !. Truly special experience
We were the unluckiest people on earth. 20 years, countless safaris, Corbett, Ranthambore, Kabini, Kaziranga. You name it, we have been there and done that (the safaris). So, we didn't really have much of a hope when we went to Wayanad, though the sightings log in their website claimed regular Tiger sightings. Some of the reviews here also spoke about tiger sightings, so we decided to go there and see if our luck changed Day 1 : Reached there later than planned, drove very slowly through Nagarahole, no carnivores, got a sloth bear though Day 2: Woke up to the caretaker knocking on our cottage door at 6:00am, opened the balcony to see all the other guests waiting near the restaurant looking ahead and clicking photos. Guess what, a few of them saw a tiger a few minutes before, wouldn't have believed it, had we had not seen the photos. Felt terribly disappointed, blamed the heavy dinner last night for the longer than usual sleep, well, what else could we have done any way. Decided to spend the entire evening in the watch tower. No luck, just elephants at the watering hole We had taken the 2 night 3 day package which included a night drive to the campfire spot. 3 minutes into the drive, there were elephants on the road, our guide waited, they moved and we continued on till we took a 90 degree turn to the right. When the guide cried out the word tiger, at first we thought he was pulling a fast one but there it was on the right hand side of the road marking its before going behind the bush. It lasted for maybe 5 seconds but after all these years, we had broken our duck Day 3: Before checking out we chose to go to Nagarahole for the JLR safari. It seems Jungle retreat has a tie up with JLR and so we got 3 seats in the JLR jeep. Anil from Jungle Retreat came with us and I have to admit, it is one of the best safaris we have been to, ever! 2 Tigers in 2 hours, both spotted by Anil. If he was not there we would have missed both the Tigers. Just shows you how important it is to have the right kind of people when you are on such safaris. You also have to give credit to the JLR jeep driver who was patient and interested is showing animals to us. 3 Tigers in 3 days, I can only imagine how many more we would have seen if we had wildlife experts during our other drives! We know that Tigers are not the only animals in our beautiful jungles, but since we have failed innumerable times looking for it, sighting a Tiger in the wild became an obsession. And now that we know how it feels, the obsession has only become stronger. We are going back in May!
After Reading all the reviews about Jungle Retreat Wayanad, I decided to give it a try on the 15th and 16th of March. I opted for the two nights, three days package Fairly big property, right next to the main road. Jungle Retreat has several cottages and a watch tower. The surrounding area is not a jungle but civilized forest. Occasionally elephants do enter the farm in search of water and banana plantation. (This is the case with every property in Wayanad). The man made water hole was filled with garbage and not maintained at all. The rooms were clean and the food quality was good, however they use coconut oil while preparing the dishes Being a wildlife enthusiast and having traveled across India seeking wildlife and adventure, I had high hopes for this one. The safari is conducted in a big 10 seater noisy diesel jeep. The property owner Anil had promised me wildlife and had given me high hopes of Tiger and Leopard sightings during the night safari. He also mentioned there were several crossing points where one needs to wait for an hour to spot wildlife. Comforting and promising was his words, we started the safari around 11 pm in the night. The road used for the safari is the main road which connects Kutta to Thirunelli. This road has lots of buses and trucks which travel during the night time carrying timber and inter district passengers. The guides were a local jeep driver who is part time sales person in a super market along with the care taker Pramod, who was totally inexperienced in spotting wildlife. They drove us all the way till Thirunelli and again to Tholepetty and back to the resort. During the whole safari we only could spot Elephant, Gaur, a rabbit and some deer. These animals are an easy sighting to anyone who cross past these roads. We got back to the resort and shared our grievance with the owner Anil. He completely changed to what he promised initially and said wildlife spotting was quite rare these days We decided to try out the Nagarhole safari the next morning and left early around 5 am from the guest house. In Nagarhole, we did the normal safari in a bus and we spotted much more wildlife than what was promised by Jungle Retreat Wayanad. The government safari lasts around an hour and a half and they take you inside the Nagarhole forest. We were able to spot an old Tusker, Gaurs, Mouse Deer, Peacock, Sambar deer, Malabar squirrel and lots of spotted deer. We also met a family who had stayed in Jungle Retreat earlier and they also had a similar experience. They later shifted to a resort in Kabini. I checked with the caretaker Pramod, and he mentioned they spot a tiger twice a week. I again checked with their jeep driver who does the safaris and he mentioned he has worked there for 2 months and has not spotted a tiger or leopard till date. The information given on their website about their Wildlife spotting (they claim to see a certain number of Tigers, Leopards, Bears every week) is totally false information We asked owner to give us a discount to compensate our disappointment and he refused it straight away. We requested him to compensate by offering us a meal which was also refused Very expensive. He charged us INR 5, 300 for one night two days. ( We cut short our stay duration due to our bitter experience). If you are seeking a real wildlife experience then Jungle Retreat Wayanad is not the right place for you. You can opt for far better resorts in Kabini at a little additional cost. JR Wayanad Resort is meant for people who seek Leisure in a comfortable farm house. Do not visit this place with expectations of spotting a carnivore, you will end up with disappointment. No value and not worth the Tariff My two copper! Thanks for Reading and enjoy your Eco tourism. :-)
We had a terrific experience in jungle retreat. The house rules - Animals have right of way and shouldn't be disturbed! (It was so refreshing to hear that). Every morning I had spotted deer around my cottage. They are wild animals and though I tried to make friends with them by offering some bananas, the moment they saw you approach them, they'd scatter. 1) "Look but don't touch" seemed to be the message. 2) You can walk inside the fenced area where you are safe, but can't walk outside the electric fenced area around the property unaccompanied. The simple reason being that elephants frequent the periphery of the property at night. They are attracted to the sweet mangoes and Jack fruits (biggest fruit I have ever seen and it is covered with spikes too! Grown in the farm. It is also not uncommon to see pugmarks in and around the property.
This place is an ideal destination for a peaceful staying as it was centrally located in the middle of the jungle. Locating this decent cottage was a problem initially. We were aware of all the facilities in advance, so did not have much to complain about it. Rooms were neat, clean and maintained. The room was fitted with AC. One of the staff was fluent in English. Some of the Kerala food was tasted. I didn't face any delay during booking process. Everything was good about this place and its worth recommending others.
