Jungle Retreat Wayanad, Wayanad
I must congratulate Anil and Anju for proving that nature, wildlife and people can coexist. Though the resort is in the jungle (when I say jungle, read as JUNGLE), there is every care taken to minimize the human footprint around the resort. There are strict rules in terms of noise levels and they don't allow folks not interested in wildlife to stay there. Very relaxed atmosphere, fantastic staff with Manu and Darshan taking care of everything. There are 3 activities you must try 1. Drive and campfire at night 2. Jungle awareness trek 3. JLR safari in Nagarahole. Regarding the rooms, the photos in the website does not do any justice to the place. Rooms are much better than what is shown in their website. The best option would be to take the all meals and activities package, this way you can enjoy the lovely Kerala cuisine as well.
This was our last stop before flying back, the only regret we have is that we didn't spend enough days in this wonderful wildlife abode. The 2 nights we spent was spent watching animals inside the retreat, or doing wildlife safaris or taking part in some of those excellent activities offered by the retreat. The staff was just so kind, we were so well looked after. The cook was amazing, and considering the remote location, he still managed to dish out excellent meals right through our stay. We had an excellent campfire with Anil, his stories were mesmerising, and having him with us for the wildlife safari was perhaps the only reason why we saw the Tiger hidden in the bush. A special thanks to Anju for assisting with our itinerary and making our stay comfortable.
The location of the hotel was average. The appearance of the hotel was nice. The hotel building was made up of wooden. The destination of the hotel was excellent. There was no delay in check in and checkout in the hotel. The hotel staff’s were behaved friendly. There was no room facility in the hotel. The food was not tasty in the hotel. The activity was not available in the hotel. I had visited this hotel with my friends for personal trip. I had booked the room by online. The Wi-Fi facility was not provided. The garden and parking facility was available. The overall experience was very good. I would suggest this hotel to improve the room service, swimming pool and provide Wi-Fi facility.
The answer to that question is Jungle Retreat Wayanad in Kerala. The location is mesmerising and we saw elephants and other animals freely roaming around in the fields ahead. The electric fencing kept the animals on the other side and humans on this. We chose the villa as we were a group on 6, all of us stayed under the same roof and the villa being located close to the jungle, is a great option for a large-ish group. The service is great and we felt completely at home, we were treated as friends, not just guests. This is a greatplace for wildlife lovers, and you will enjoy it if you are not the stuck-up kind.
Need a private vehicle. May encounter traffic jams but not too heavy or long. Use only Highways and avoid interior Google roads. Carry food as nothing us available. Plastic bottles are not allowed inside the island. Security guys are absolutely foolish, brainless and arrogant and think they are protecting the waters from Somalian pirates (Indian citizens).
There are places that will stick with you even after you check out, one such is the Jungle retreat Wayanad. The staff and the service they provide is just so personal and outstanding. The cook is another superstar there, tasty Indian cuisine at its best. Nothing to beat the location, it is surrounded by beautiful jungle on all sides and we had ample wildlife sightings from our room itself. Now that is priceless! We took the activities package and it covered treks, safaris, camp fire and a visit to a jungle stream.
This was our second visit, it was better than the first. The hospitality along with the wildlife sightings make JRW special. We really enjoyed the food, the trek and the safari was excellent as usual. Thanks to holiday IQ to make such a wonderful memory to cherish all the time.
We booked a room with Jungle Retreat a month back on TravelGuru and paid the full price for two nights. It was one of the biggest mistakes I have made recently since I didn't expect to be treated the way we were. My husband hurt his leg the day before we were supposed to get there and could not walk. The cancellation policy said that we could lose almost all the money (You might be charged up to the full cost of stay (including taxes & service charge) if you do not check-in to the hotel) if we didn't cancel by Aug 4 for a Sep 3 travel so to be fair we should have been warned. What I didn't expect was the horrible attitude of Ms. Anju (Management of Jungle Retreat) whom we spoke to. Between getting my husband's leg attended to, we tried to call her and check if anything can be done to refund at least some money. I had low hopes but I have faced situations before where people have been at least cooperative in case of an emergency. A friend of mine had his full money refunded when he faced an emergency. The hotel staff ensured that they refunded the money in spite of the cancellation policy. But not Ms. Anju. She seemed concerned only with getting the money. Since the travel site had released the money to the resort she had the sole power and she used it by dismissing us and asking us to talk to the travel company and not to bother her. On top of that, she had a hard tone from the start and said things like "You didn't call us when you booked so why are you calling us now?" "If you had booked with us I could have done something" "I have told the travel company if I get a replacement booking then only I can do something". I admit that I may have appeared angry when I was talking to her but she made no attempt to understand that we were facing a real emergency. To that her reply was "I do not wish to have this unpleasant conversation with you". Glad they know what providing good service means. We didn't get any of our money back in the end, which I can still understand since we made the booking with the cancellation policy in place. But what didn't go down well with us was the way the Anju dismissed a valid case without even making an attempt to check the facts, while being very high handed about it. I am just sorry I lost money to a place that is run by people like her. What they seem to not be aware of that they may own/run a resort but people save for their vacations and even a little understanding/compassion would have gone a long way. It may be a very beautiful place (not that I will ever go there after what happened) but our experience with the management was very very ugly.
We have been to many wildlife resorts in India and around the world, but one refreshing thing we noticed in jungle retreat is that wildlife comes first more than anything else. What I mean is, they have zero tolerance to anything that disturbs nature and wildlife and it is clear that they are not running it purely for money. There were elephants in the meadows and they looked very comfortable grazing there, and the guests were told to keep completely silent, great experience seeing the gentle giants grazing peacefully in the presence of humans, since we kept a safe distance and didn't do anything to get them disturbed. The theme is very wildlife centric with safaris arranged in Tholapetty and Nagarhole. We took JLR safari from Jungle Retreat at a fraction of what you'd pay if you went directly with Jungle Lodges, yes, we had a Tiger sighting as well. But Jungle Retreat Wayanad is more than just a place for Tiger sightings, I think it is a living proof of responsible tourism, clear example of nature and humans coexisting without conflict.
It took us around 6 hours to reach the resort from wayanad and the last 2 hours of it were through the jungle. Great, motorable road. Fabulous, warm welcome and we were taken to the cutest cottage facing the fields. We open the door and the first thing we see is a pack of wild dogs chasing and killing a deer. It all happened so fast that we didn't get time to take our camera out. Never thought we would enjoy Kerala cuisine so much, that cook is just amazing. The dinner was even better, complete with soup and fruits. The boys went out of the way to make us comfortable, quite literally, never experienced such service before. Anil, your knowledge about animals and reading how they would react, that was a masterclass! Anju, loved the way you have made the Retreat a real treat! Anil and Anju, you have built a paradise, please don't change a thing!
How can someone not fall in love with Kerala is just beyond me. If you ever go to Kerala, you must try jungle retreat Wayanad. 6 of us, all girls decided to take a break from our IT lives, we wanted to go somewhere remote, safe and very private. It is purely by coincidence that we found jungle retreat online. That was the best decision we ever made. Anju the young host is also from the IT world in Bangalore and hats off to her for taking a break from her IT life and pursuing her dreams. She treated us friends and it felt as though we have known her/them for years! The location is amazing and though we are not very hardcore animal lovers, we still enjoyed the total peace and calmness of the forests where the resort was situated. The food was just awesome, the other staff was just so helpful and amazing. With the limited number of rooms they have and the policy of not taking noisy bachelors ensured that we had complete privacy! We also talked to Anil, who is Anju's other half, the way he explains jungle stuff is just so captivating, he is one amazing story teller and we were soon transformed to kids listening to stories !! One evening the heavens opened up and sitting in the balcony of our 2 bedroom villa, watching the rain fall across the grasslands, it felt that we were the only ones in God's green earth! Truly special experience
Just came back after 3 days of real jungle experience in Wayanad, Kerala. The location is mind boggling. I never realized that there were such places in India where I could view wild animals without having to stand in ques and go in safaris. This jungle retreat was just amazing as we saw more animals inside the retreat, in their large meadows than during the safari we took in kabini and nagarhole. The set of activities we were offered were just excellent. The best 2 were the jungle awareness trek which is through their retreat and it was clear that we were in elite company as we saw fresh pugmarks of the tiger during the trek and heard the call of the leopard from afar. Spine tingling. The other activity I will recommend is the camp fire near the stream at night. We were taken in the Jeep at night to another property they own near the jungle stream a 30 minute drive. The drive was thrilling as a big bull elephant blocked the road for a good 10 minutes and once we reached there, it was just magical to listen to the jungle sounds enjoying the warmth of the camp fire close the river under a clear sky lit up with a million stars. Amazing experience. Must also commend Anil, the knowledge he has about the jungle is incredible, his stories and the way he says it is just to captivating, feels as though you are listening to jon corbett or a kednneth anderson. The support staff is excellent as well, polite, caring, friendly. We never thought we would actually enjoy Kerala cuisine so much. You can't go wrong there I guess. This place is beyond doubt one of the best place for a wildlife lover.
We, my husband and I are hardcore wildlife enthusiasts and we have traveled the length and breadth of the country. We would say we are experienced travelers especially into the wild corners of India, but the few days spent in Jungle Retreat Wayanad was clearly something else. The rooms are cute and nice, above all very, very clean, no fancy, no luxury - that is not needed also. The food is plated meals with an unlimited serving of Indian delicacies, suited our taste perfectly. We are especially careful when we travel, we loved the simple, but tasty and fresh food served here supplemented by servings of fruits and salads. What takes the prize is the location. It is surrounded by 3 national parks and we had amazing sightings right from the room we stayed in. Elephants, gaurs, wild dogs making a kill - it was unreal! We heard elephants splashing around in the watering hole in the night while we were in the bed, and we came out to the balcony and we could see a herd in the water enjoy a bath under the full moon! Unreal! There are 3 national parks near by, all within 30 minutes. We went for 3 safari drives - 1 in Wayanad wildlife sanctuary - elephants, gaurs. 1 in Nagarahole - 1 Tiger, elephants, Gaur and 1 in Kabini - 1 Leopard, elephants. My 2 cents would be, if you are a wildlife lover, look no further, go there - just go there! Do take camouflage clothes, walking shoes and a hat. They provide excellent guides who can take you for walks, you don't want to miss that either!
We knew what to expect after reading all those great reviews about Jungle Retreat Wayanad but we are still pleasantly surprised with the hospitality that we experienced while staying there. Right from the initial booking process was simple and straightforward and we were informed about the possible activities right through our stay with multiple options given. We were treated as part of the family, excellent service that we had never experienced before ever. Regarding the wildlife sighting, we were unlucky on the first day as we did not see any animals except spotted deer in the famed meadows of jungle retreat wayanad. It was attributed to the fact that a tigress had made a kill near by and during the trek we actually went and saw the kill. It was spotted deer, that too inside their farm. We decided to come back cutting the trek short but that experience was just amazing. 2nd evening we were lucky to see a tusker close to the watchtower and the Indian gaur also came down for water. Special mention must be given to a cook who tickled our taste buds with the wonderful kerala cuisine. We will miss this special place, that is for sure, but we are hoping to come back during the next holidays. Anil the owner has the amazing knowledge about wildlife which he gleefully passed on to us. Wishing the Jungle Retreat team every bit of luck, god bless.
My family and I (husband + two adult children) had four days at jungle retreat wayanad last month and oh, what a place to be. Within two hours of arriving in the retreat we were out on our first drive! Magical is the only word to describe it. We were treated so well, with laughter and kindness the whole time. Nothing was too much trouble. We did so much and saw a lot and could have stayed there forever. The awareness trek in the hills is a must. The retreat is surrounded by jungle on all sides and since there are no neighbors the night time was just pristine - and the sky at night is beyond belief. The animal noises were interesting too! Pramod, our guide, was brilliant and really went the extra mile. We learnt to light a fire using rocks, learnt basics of tracking animals, thanks to the tribal guide we had. The rooms were clean and lovely with the most magnificent view and a lovely verandah to sit on. The food is fairly simple but very good. My son is a vegetarian and they catered very well for him. There is a near by jungle stream and the afternoon swim was great. We didn’t have any mosquitoes or insects. The animals were amazing, in fact there is nothing bad I can say about it. Everything was more than we had dreamed of. After the game drives, all the staff were interested in what we had seen even although they must have heard it a 100 times! Tea at 4pm was so nice and appreciated before one’s evening outing. I would highly recommend anyone going on jungle retreat to go on the night safari. I cannot praise it enough. It stole a piece of our hearts and gave us the most amazing memories to keep.
