Jwalamukhi Temple

Jwalamukhi Temple, also known as Jwalaji, is one of the Shakti Peethas. This shrine is located at a distance of 30 km south of Kangra valley and is dedicated to Goddess Jwalamukhi. Goddess Jwalamukhi is also known as Goddess with flaming mouth. This temple features a copper pipe through which natural gas comes out.

There are nine such flames in the sanctum which are named after Goddesses Mahakali, Unpurna, Chandi, Hinglaj, Bindhya Basni, Maha Lakshmi, Saraswati, Ambika and Anji Devi. The flames burning continuously can be witnessed erupting from rock-side, without any fuel.

According to the legend it is believed that Sati's tongue fell at Jwalaji where the goddess  manifests as tiny flames. These flames burn flawless blue through fissures present in the age-old rock, located in this temple.

In addition, as per historians Mughal emperor Akbar also visited the shrines so as to test it’s originality. After enlightenment, the emperor became a devotee of the Goddess and presented a Chattra (umbrella) of gold to the goddess. Besides, the water course in this temple premises is said to have been constructed by Akbar in an attempt to extinguish the jets of flames in the temple.
