KSTDC Mayura Gerusoppa, Jog Falls
Jog Falls Sagar Taluk
Ranked 1 of 15 hotels in Jog Falls
Our visit was not planned, since whatever we were planning, it was not getting materialized due to one or the other reason. Within short period that we were left with, the nearest railway station was showing TALGUPPA, however no trains from Mumbai could be found. Even for another station SHIMOGA(SAGAR) no connection from Mumbai was availableUltimately, we went via BIRUR station and reached in the evening. Luckily the taxi driver was good and said that Mayura Gerusoppa is the best place to stay there and although we would be reaching there late, they will keep the dinner(which is basically south Indian type). True to his words, we were welcomed by the staff who seemed to be in a hurry to go home after duty. Food was good. Room was old fashioned, however served the purpose, considering the rates. They informed that this is going to be rennovated shortly. Next day as soon as we went out, there was beautiful sight of the Jog falls jusst in front of the hotel. The location of Mayara Gerusoppa is very beatiful and at the heart of the place. All other resorts are located far away(near Talguppa or Sagar). At Mayura, who can really enjoy nature and go walking to the nearby spots. The restaurant was maintained OK , not very posh, but tasty food. Hygiene was Ok, but could have been maintained still better. Room cleaning staff was not sent, when we had gone out, which was also pointed out. Professionalism was lacking, but simplicity was there and luckily business arrogance found in many a five star staff was absent. Room service was not there, but the restaurant is just by the side and you can take that much trouble. Light and Sound show in the backyard lawns of the hotel in evening was good. On afterthought, we could have gone first to Dharwad first by train and from there, by bus route to gerusoppa, instead of Birur (at least 8 to 10 hours travel could have been saved).
We booked a Room in Hotel Mayura and stayed in Sharavathi Block. It is the only worthwhile place to stay in Jog Falls area. The other options is to stay in Shimoga - Royal Orchid and Jewel rock Hotel. 2 Hours drive from Shimoga - roads in Good shape ( Surprise! ) except for a very short stretch after Sagara. Hotel Mayura - Sharavathi Block rooms are very spacious. Clean. A/c leaks though. The best part is it offers a fantastic view of the falls from the room itself. Do not expect any room service. There are just 3 people who double up and a receptionist, Room cleaning and supervision, billing and check out and finally in the evening open the kitchen and cook food for the visitors! Severely understaffed. Food in Jog Falls area is a bit of a lottery. There is only one restaurant, it is not visually appealing at all, pooor painted, etc. But good for things like Dosa, Idli, lunch ( Veg thali meals ). Dinner options close every early. In our case all food was \"Done\" by 7 p.m. because of the extra rush! Fortunately there is another shopping complex nearby equally badly maintained that offer Maggie, Omlette, Colored Rice, etc. We got one shop verndor to make customized Maggie and ensured that they use the water from our Bisleri bottle for the cooking purpose! Now about the Jog Falls itself. Try to get to the falls during the morning hours. It is reasonably quiet and gives you a good feel good factor. By noon and evening the crowd is unruly and quite a sizeable percentage of them visibly drunk / howling / etc ( even though there are no bars in the immediate vicinity ). The flight of stairs lead you down to the base of the falls. Easily 1000 plus steps - gets steeper as you go down. Coming up is quite an effort! Good Adventure - it was raining as we came up. Just adds to the fun! Remember to take a view of the falls from the other side as well. It is worth! The toilet complex is fortunately clean. Overall worth the time and effort if there is good water flowing at Sharavathi.
I had visited this hotel with my friends for relaxation purpose. The overall experience was very good in the hotel. The complimentary breakfast was provided by the hotel. The food quality was very good at the hotel. The activity was not arranged by the hotel. The allotted room was spacious with neat and clean. All basic amenities were provided in the room. The behaviour of the staff was friendly. The check in and checkout was done on time. The hotel appearance was ok. The hotel was located outside the city. The transportation facility was available nearby the hotel. I would suggest this hotel to provide non-vegetarian food in the hotel.
If you want to stay in the falls, this is the only place. There are two blocks here - Sharavathi and Tunga. Sharavati block is a very good and believe me if you enter the room you will be impressed and wonder that it a really a govt. property or not. Let me begin by saying that this is one of the most outstanding tourist properties run by the Karnataka govt. (Only you can compare with MP tourism or Kerala tourism properties) which I have visited or stayed in. The location is unbeatable. Named after the Sharavathi River that cascades almost 1000 ft down the gorge to form the roaring Jog falls, a breathtaking view from their beautiful French windows. Though i visited in the month of October 2013 the fall which divides into four different span i.e. Raja, Rani, Rocket and Roarer greet you in their splendid form between July and September and make the most of this opportunity to see India's second highest falls amid lush settings. Ruby throated bul bul and oriental dwarf Kingfisher i got in Front of My room. Also Asian paradise flycatcher near falls. A rainbow on falls is a cherry to your cake and i witnessed this. The best time to visit Jog is right after the rains, as you see them full and brimming Advantage:- Sharavati Block - The Room is big, Huge , Nice Comfortable , LCD ,Even extra bed also nicely decorated, Large window , dressing Room , Bathroom . From Big window you see the falls directly. Tunga Block - (Avoid Tunga block due to lower category room and poor maintenance. Don't make your kids and parents stay there I mean at TUNGA BLOCK) Disadvantage:- The major disadvantage is there is no room service, No tea at room in the morning, canteen almost 500 metre away and every time you have to go there. Then food - Absolutely horrible. There is one KSTDC Mayura restaurant in front of Tunga blocks near falls and believe me food is a great disappointment. You cannot taste Veg Meals. There are plenty of private canteens near Main entrance and you can try them, at least i took morning tea and breakfast from there but at night the maximum food store are closed near main gate.
