About Kallanai Dam
Kallanai Dam or the Grand Anicut is one of the main attractions of Tiruchirapalli. Kallanai Dam which is spread over an area of about 146.70 sq. km was built in the 1st century by the Chola King Karikalan. The word Kallanai, means 'Stone Dam' in Tamil.
The dam was constructed across the holy river Cauvery for irrigation purposes in the Cauvery Delta. The 329 m long and 20 m wide Kallanai Dam is considered as the oldest dam in the world, which is still in use. It is also from the location of this dam, that the River Cauvery breaks up in to two channels - Kollidam and Cauvery.
