The Karnala Bird Sanctuary is located at a distance of 26 km from Navi Mumbai. Situated in the Panvel Taluka of Raigad District, it covers an area of 4.27 sq km. This bird sanctuary is situated at the bottom of the Karnala Fort and was established in 1968. There are more than 150 species of birds inhabiting this sanctuary and around 37 species of migratory birds.

At the beginning of the monsoon season, travellers can spot the paradise flycatcher with its fairy-like white streamers, the shama or the magpie robin and the Malabar whistling thrush. Two rare species of birds, namely Ashy Minivet and Malabar Trogon can also be seen at this site.

The sanctuary is situated on the Mumbai-Pune Highway connecting the destination with Goa and can be ideally visited between the months of October and April. The sanctuary can also be visited during the monsoon season.

Tourists can watch the racket-tailed drongo, golden backed woodpecker and heart-spotted woodpecker, among others. In the winter season, many migratory birds can be seen in addition to the resident birds.

The migrant birds include a variety of birds such as the blackbird, blue-headed rock-thrush, bluethroat, red breasted flycatcher and black headed cuckoo-shrike, to name a few.

It is best short trip along with a hiking add on to this wonderful scenic place. It is must see for kids so that they can learn more about the nature. It is advisable to wear a good pair of shoes for hiking. Also please safeguard your valuable and stuff from monkeys. Food and herbal drinks a must to have. Overall a family trip to plan for a one day picnic.

Grab the binoculars and head here to see the awesome birds. Just do not carry food as there are lot of monkeys here, they snatch food if you carry do not open until you get to the top.
