About Karnala Fort

voted as clean

10 km from the city region of Panvel is the fort of Karnala, which is also known by the name Funnel Hill. The Karnala Fort is located within the protected region of Karnala Bird Sanctuary and it also has a very important place in the ancient history of the region. The Karnala Fort is located on the route of the Bor pass, which used to be the ancient trade route of the region.

The Karnala Fort has two small towers within itself with one at higher level while the other is located at the lower area of the fort. The basalt pillar located at the centre region of the tower is about 125 ft high and the tower is also known by the name of Pandu Tower. Presently the tower is in ruined condition, but earlier the tower was used as a watch tower. The nearby regions of Rajmachi and Prabalgad are clearly visible from the region.

"Trekking to Karnala Fort"

  • 5.0/7
  • Posted Jan 4, 2016
It is situated in Raigad district, 10km from Panvel. It was built in 13th century and hence has great trekking historical significance. The place is ideal for bird watchers because of Karnala Bird Sanctuary, there are a total of 400 species of birds found including falcon, sunbird, drongo & various colourful butterflies. The trek part is not too difficult, one can also go with their family. Best time recommended to visit is in early morning. The view from top of the fort is great and one can witness all ghats in the nearby area.

One of the oldest fort who has witnessed ruling of various empires in Maharashtra starting from Yadav, Nizam, Mughal, Portuguese, Maratha, Peshwa till Britishers. The ruins of fort still gives a good idea of its vitality for patrolling nearby region. Its an easy trek that can be finished in 4-5 hrs.

Once you finish the trek, you can see the huge fort which is the best example of ancient architecture, Water tanks, ruins of bastions, big entrances, & temple of fort goddess! But before that, many colourful flowers, various species of trees throughout the natures trail.

One needs to take a share auto (tum-tum) or ST bus from Panvel Rail. Stn. & get down at Karnala Bird Sanctuary. Nominal fees is charged for entry & Camera. Food is available aftr few minutes walk once you ebter. Although, you can carry your own food too! Water is available only for those who can drink the water on the top, the fort has a natural source of water tanks carved in the huge stones.

Quick tip: wear good grip shoes & carry atleast 2 litres of water.

Best time to visit: Winter.

A good place for trekkers and nature enthusiasts. If paid careful attention beautiful birds can be spotted. A must try, it will be difficult for old aged people. This fort was used as watchtower and it is at great height. It is advisable to wear good quality sport shoes. A 30 min journey from Panvel station and can get tumtum from panvel stn.

"Picturesque location and sights"

An affordable and relishing family outing destination. Along with bird sanctuary, it is also good for some moderate trekking experience. Takes around 1.5 hrs uphill (for Karnala Fort) and around 45 minutes for return.

Must to have: Light snacks and at least 1 water bottle per person. As during trekking, there are no food stalls.

Best time to visit : Anytime, preferably not during heavy rains or peak summer afternoons.

Overall: It takes around 4 hours for the complete experience.

Entry fee is nominal.

"Only for trekking"

  • 4.0/7
  • Posted Jul 29, 2015
This place is for someone who love trekking, it's really very difficult for old people to walk on such height. Now food and drinking water is not allowed in plastic (to save environment from dirt). On reaching top there is nothing for view, I will recommend this place only in winter, because in summer you will dehydrate and in rainy season it's not safe.

"Best in Monsoon, wear grip shoes, carry water"

  • 6.5/7
  • Posted Oct 4, 2014
Best time to travel this fort is between June and September. Once you reach at bottom of this fort, you will have to pay for parking vehicles and entry fee for you. If you go straight to the road, you will find few steps and rocks heading you towards the fort. Make sure to have high gripped shoes and 2-3 litres of water with you while travelling up. Also, you will see different species of birds during this period if you are lucky enough to have one view.
