Kempty Falls, situated at an altitude of 4,500 ft, is one of the popular tourist places of Mussoorie. It is a beautiful waterfall, which falls from a height of about 40 ft from a mountain. This fall is located on way between Dehradun-Mussoorie path.

John Mekinan, in 1835, had developed this place as a tourist destination due to its panoramic surroundings and views. The name of the place is derived from Camp-tea, the place where Britishers organised tea parties during their ruling period.

The falls is one of the largest among five down rushing falls, which flows down through various rocks and finally enters into the plains. While going 12 km downhill and after crossing the Aglar River, tourists can also reach the Yamuna River. Further, the site is also popular for swimming and fishing activities.

The place is visited for taking bath under the falls and for enjoying the beautiful views of surroundings. Tourists can also reach a beautiful pond while climbing a few steps in the flow of the stream. Located at the footsteps of the falls, the pond is a huge enclosure formed naturally by the stream.

Tourists can easily reach the destination by hiring taxis or buses, which regularly operate from Mussoorie as well as Dehradun.

"Can also take ropeway walk" new review

If you want to take the rope way while coming up, it is preferable that you take the journey by rope way trolley from top only. Fare wise it is better offer and less tiring.

"The cheerful boisterous brook - a must visit in Mussoorie" new review

  • 6.50/7
  • Posted 2 weeks ago
This chirpy, spirited waterfall would certainly grab attention of the tourists who are taking a trip to Mussoorie, a hill station in Dehradun. The visit would readily cheer one up in whatever mood the person travels - it's been like a laughter in an otherwise serious, solemn, mountainous climate.

We roamed around various spots of Mussoorie in Autumn noons, when the weather looked gloomy and a little foggy. At about 1pm we reached this waterfall - which seemed joyous despite the background gloom as the name 'Kempty' (derived from 'Camp-tea') suggests, this place is most suitable for gatherings, outings and picnic and perhaps so, it was once the Britishers' fond camping and tea-party spot.

The dark-green vegetation of tall Oaks & Pines that almost enfolded this fall from both sides and brooks nearby is a home to many birds which created together a cheerful cacophony to accompany the continuous gargling sound of the fall.

We viewed the rapid, vigorous waterfall from a bridge that intersected the fall from the middle. Among the tourists assembled there, a few were taking the rocky track along the falls to climb up - it is adventurous and for the youngsters (even non-trekkers) it is fun challenging.

The pacy water falls further 40fts down and much below the bridge into a lake which is another popular sightseeing and a nature-park. We went down by the spiral stairs of rock to get to that lake spot. It's a peaceful place with nice ambiance - the green is eye-soothing and well maintained where one can get various entertaining arrangements - mostly boating and paddling, then coracle rides (rare though), small water sports (nowadays practiced), and of course fancy dressing (dressing up in local ethnic attire - which I too sported, & posed for a perfect click) are some enthralling activities prevailing there - which one must check out if possible.

As for food one can get anything and everything in the stationary shops around, but one long glass of saffron flavored milk and hot spongy gulab jamuns were simply lip-smacking, which I could not resist even after having lunch. The fruit juices, lassi, samosas and other snacks in road-side cafeteria also seemed appealing.

"Go only if you have spare time" new review

  • 3.50/7
  • Posted 3 weeks ago
Nothing special here, the Kempty Falls are just like hundreds of others in the country. Somehow it remains crowded most of the time, being part of most peoples' itinerary in Mussoorie. Not very neat and tidy either. Go only if you have time to spare.
