About Kempty Falls

Kempty Falls, situated at an altitude of 4,500 ft, is one of the popular tourist places of Mussoorie. It is a beautiful waterfall, which falls from a height of about 40 ft from a mountain. This fall is located on way between Dehradun-Mussoorie path.

John Mekinan, in 1835, had developed this place as a tourist destination due to its panoramic surroundings and views. The name of the place is derived from Camp-tea, the place where Britishers organised tea parties during their ruling period.

The falls is one of the largest among five down rushing falls, which flows down through various rocks and finally enters into the plains. While going 12 km downhill and after crossing the Aglar River, tourists can also reach the Yamuna River. Further, the site is also popular for swimming and fishing activities.

The place is visited for taking bath under the falls and for enjoying the beautiful views of surroundings. Tourists can also reach a beautiful pond while climbing a few steps in the flow of the stream. Located at the footsteps of the falls, the pond is a huge enclosure formed naturally by the stream.

Tourists can easily reach the destination by hiring taxis or buses, which regularly operate from Mussoorie as well as Dehradun.

"Kempty Falls and Mussourie visit" new review

  • 6.0/7
  • Posted 3 weeks ago
Kempty Falls is about 50 kms from the city of Dehradun. The Mussuorie city which is situated on the hills is about 35 kms ahead of Dehradun. Uttarakhand State buses ply between Dehradun and Mussourie every day starting approx 6 AM in the morning.
It takes about 1. 5 hour to travel to Kempty Falls from Dehradun city.
For budget travel one can board a travel by boarding state bus. However one can hire a taxi (Transport cost Rs. 17/KM on plane roads and on hilly roads Rs. 18/KM). Approx. Cost Rs. 2500 for a whole day trip to Mussourie.
Places to cover in a whole day journey for Mussourie are
Kempty Falls
The Mall Road
Mussourie Lake
Prakaseshwar Shiva Temple (This is a private Trust they don't accept any kind of donation in cash or kind plus they offer free Prasad and Tea to all travellers who offer a visit on the way to Mussourie)
Malshi Deer Park
It can take around 7 hours to cover these points in a day trip. On the way to return you can also pay visit to the Sakya Buddha Temple, Sai Temple and Ramakrishna Temple on the Rajpur Road.
Happy Holidaying!

"Kempty on Rainy Day"

  • 5.5/7
  • Posted Aug 1, 2016
The water-fall will be worth visiting during hot summers. As it was raining we didn't tried bathing in the man-made pool at the place. Every one was enjoying the water-fall. For ladies it is advisable to avoid the water-fall else bring good swim-wears which can cover you completely. Take some gift items from the shops besides the stairs. You can try boating but will not enjoy a lot as it is a small pond.

"Not so good"

It is surrounded by lot of buildings which destroys its beauty. In my opinion this can be avoided if you have seen other falls. We found far better falls at Yamunotri.

Try to visit upper Kempty fall above the bridge, local will guide, it has more pristine water to experience, best place to shop in Mussoorie is indeed the market(most economical) in narrow lane near the cable car which takes you Kempty fall located down below, but seriously guys, if you are married or with family avoid bath.

"Chilling water of the fall"

  • 6.0/7
  • Posted May 29, 2016
It is wonderful to visit the fall and take a dip to the cold water in such heat in other part of country. Over commercialized is the place as they charge Rs. 100 for the fall but besides the fall nothing there.

John mckinnon has founded this place as a picnic spot for the britishers, they use to organise camp here for tea only. This place is around 13 kilometres from Mussoorie, very beautiful and good to enjoy the bath in the fall.

"Nice place to visit once"

I like this waterfall but unfortunate the local administrations are not taking care properly hence the place is deteriorating its natural beauty.

Traveller should go by ropeway or by stairs. Although stairs are little exhausting.
