Khardung La Pass Overview

Ranked 6 of 101 sightseeing in Ladakh (Leh)

The Khardung La or the Khardung Pass is located in the Ladakh region, in Jammu and Kashmir in northern India.

There are many claims to the Khardung La being cited as the highest vehicle-accessible pass in the world, elevated at an incredible 5,359 m. Needless to say, the incredible landscape with mountains and valleys peppered with clear lakes and rivers in the surrounding topography of the region is a major attraction, bringing tourists and travellers the world over.

The Pass allows entry into the Shyok and Nubra valleys. The amazing Siachen Glacier lies halfway up the Nubra valley, which is of great importance to India since it’s often used to carry supplies to the glacier. The pass was opened to public motor vehicles in 1988 and has since seen an increase in motorbike and mountain biking expeditions for adventure enthusiasts and travellers alike.

Besides the stunning beauty of the surrounding region of Leh-Ladakh, Khardung La in itself has a lot to offer to an explorer. The clear cold air, unpolluted sights and sounds and the majesty of the mountain range is an experience you won’t easily forget. Add to these the friendly villagers nearby and the quaint shops and teashops and you’ll get all that you looked for on your Himalayan holiday.

Highest motorable road ...

Every person who has got lehd, Khardungla is a must visit. Its less than 100 km from leh city but it will still take over 2 hours to reach with road condition been really bad i mean there is absolutely no road. Yes the trip is worth and absolute scenic. Oxygen cylinders will be available at military camp. DO enjoy the maaggie at cafe there and a black tea. You woul finish that in like liess than 2 minutes.

Highest peak of motorable road on the planet-Khardung La pass

Imagine you are a two wheeler vehicle and the roads are tough by nature to drive along through it. And the roads where you are is the highest motorable road, the weather is also quite chilling in the place. Reaching the place with minimum factors under our control and is an achievement by itself to have witnessed this highest peak point. Proud to have drove down to Khardung La Pass.

On top of the world

While visiting Nubra Valley from Leh one has to cross through the highest motorable mountain pass at 18,380 feet, known as Khardung La. It was a great experience, felt on top of the world. After having acclimatized our bodies at Leh for two days, we did not feel any difficulty at such high altitude. But it is advisable not to stay at the pass for more than fifteen minutes. It is a good spot to enjoy the views of the mighty mountains and beautiful valleys. One sore point was that the toilets at the spot are for some inexplicable reason kept locked, The journey to the top and the descent from there was adventurous. BRO has done a great job in building and maintaining the roads,

Riders Paradise

The highest motorable pass in the world. Take a bike and go for this great pass. You will never regret. You will get lot of experience and hell lot of awesome moments and you will learn lot about riding through the good, bad and all kinds of roads and all kind of conditions. This pass will be covered with snow and there may be snow falls any moment and chances of land slides are also there. Always check with the riders way back to check the routes ahead and ride carefully.

Awesome experience at 18380 ft

it was first time i have ever been to this height. this place has altitude of 18380 ft. all covered with snow at time of visit. oxygen level is slightly less so it was advised to stay there for few min (close to 20-25 min). But these few mins are good enough for this awesome place.

Do not to stop for more than 25 min

We went there in the month of April 2015. It is highest motor able point of India and second in the world. You may face problems due to lack of oxygen . they have clearly mentioned not to stop for more than 25 min...... But fortunately we were there for around 45 minutes as military vehicles passing .... A very nice location for photographs.

Every bikers dream

Even though it held the title of the highest motorable in the world, some people still consider it to be. Whether it is or not, conquering it by motorcycle is almost every bikers dream. To bad at around 5600-5800 mts (debatable height) you cannot stay long enough (to avoid AMS) to enjoy the feeling.
