Khecheopalri Lake

Khecheopalri Lake is a sacred lake for both Buddhists and Hindus. Located near the Khecheopalri village, this lake is an integral part of the valley of Demazong. It is also part of the Buddhist religious pilgrimage circuit, which includes Yuksom, the Dubdi Monastery in Yuksam, Pemayangtse Monastery, Rabdentse Ruins, Sanga Choeling Monastery and Tashiding Monastery.

According to legend, this lake is believed to represent one of the four plexus of the human body, namely the thorax. Yuksam, Tashiding and Pemayangtse represent the other three plexes, namely the third eye, the head and the heart, respectively.

Surrounded by a broad-leaved mixed temperate forest, tourists can see macrophytes, phytoplankton and zooplankton near the lake. Besides these, this lake is also home to different fish species, including Cyprinus carpio, Danio aequipinnatus and Schizothorax. Several birds that can be spotted near this lake are grebe, common teal, tufted duck and Amaurornisbi colour.

Popularly known as a wish-fulfilling lake, the sacred Khecheopalri Lake is used only for performing rites and rituals. Boat rides can be taken in the lake. Every year, during the ‘Maghe Purne’ (March/April), one of the largest festivals is held here for two days. Another major festival, Chho-Tsho, is also celebrated here during the month of October.
