Excellent place to relax mind and body

6.1/7
Posted 5 Feb, 2016

Went there with family and stayed 2 nights over the weekend. Basically, we were looking for a break from monotonous city life and repetitive, stressful work. My wife, two teen aged kids and my elderly parents constituted our group. We set off from Bangalore on a Thursday afternoon around 4. 15 pm and reached Shimoga city by car around 10:30 pm after a halt on the way for dinner, after Arsikere. Stayed overnight at Shimoga before setting off for Kolavara heritage next day to reach there around noon. En route, visited the Sakrebyle elephant camp The homestay is part of a large Malnad family mansion, now well restored and maintained on a 35 acre plantation containing mainly arecanut trees, pepper, coffee and some cardamom. It's about 18 kms from Thirthahalli town and if it were not for precise driving instructions, it's easy to miss the place and lose your way. Signs leading to the place are few and inconspicuous. But once there, you are treated and welcomed more as part of family than a guest. Rooms are spacious, neat and scrupulously clean. The Bath and toilets are modern and there is plenty of hot water available. Bed linen clean and beds large and comfy. No A/c and no WiFi if you want this and you need to get your own Bath towels and Bath toiletries. Our rooms had TV with DTH and frankly, we didn't watch TV here as much as we watch at home. The main house on the property is where the owners stay and the rooms are housed in outhouses that once were storehouses and granaries, I am told. The owners arrange for a bonfire outside your room every evening and we were invited to taste some homemade liqueur/wine, which we didn't partake in being teetotalers Mr. Narayan Murthy the owner, is always making rounds to see that guests are comfortable and not left wanting in any way. His son, Nischal, daughter-in -law Mrs Vatsalya and wife Mrs Murthy all chip in and ably support to maintain the place. Paschal will go out of his way to guide you to see nearby places and gave us tips on places to visit in the vicinity. There's Kuppali village, the home place of Kuvempu. Famed Kannada poet and writer, nearby: besides, there's the river Tunga which flows and you can visit safe area for a dip, there are hilltops for magnificent sunset/sunrise views, you can go on treks( Paschal will help arrange a guide), see local temples and if you like, can play TT or chess or carrom on the equipment available at the homestay. There were also three good bicycles around for use of guests. Excellent place for bird watching and maybe fishing in the river if you carry your equipment for that. Nice place to simply sit and read a book or engage in conversation with friends around the bonfire in the evenings Meals provided include breakfast, lunch and dinner and you can have extra snacks provided for with prior notice given. Meals are cooked with attention to guest's likes/dislikes and were delicious. Authentic Malnad cuisine. Veg and non veg, we had excellent chicken and fried local fish. The hospitality is overwhelming and it's hard not to overeat! The main cook is one Mr. Devaiah who is mostly self taught, but is now a masterchef in local cuisine Overall, a place to go with family and close friends. A place to unwind, escape from city madness and grind. It will give you a perspective of life in the countryside. Not for you if you can't do without a disclaiming pool/ gym or spa. And, may get bored if you stay more than 2 days. Please carry BSNL sim cards when you go, no other Mobile sim signals accessible here. Plenty of parking place and drivers / maids accompanying are provided for with same meals and have separate restrooms. Ideal place to go and stay if you miss and feel nostalgic about you own hometown/roots.

Kolavara, the cool homestay

5.1/7
Posted 1 Mar, 2016

Nestled in the heart of malnad, had a wonderful weekend at kolavara, the heritage homestay. Added advantage was the proximity of the great kannada poet kuvempu's birthplace kuppalli where we spent half a day enjoying the literary feast and enjoying the sunset at kavishaila with a breathtaking view of the western ghats. If you have affinity to divine, can visit sringeri, the temple town nearby and get blessed at the famous sharada temple, with children enjoying feeds to swarm of fishes at river tunga. Also can spend some time nearby at the serene sirimane falls. The homestay itself is a simple yet elegant place in a hilly area with a nice well maintained garden and small ponds with water lillies and a mix of colourful flowers. Lots of plantation with varieties including coffee plant and spices, with greenery everywhere. We were made to feel at home by the hospitality and taken care of with a personal touch. The rooms comfortably accommodate two people, however with children may require a larger one which is also available. The food was usually a buffet serving the coastal and malnad culinary delicacies, of course not the usual stuff of restaurants. What excited us was the tasting of variety of home made wines. The scope for activities included table tennis, carrom and chess and also the traditional 'chinna mane' to be played on a lazy rainy day in the heavy monsoon of malnad. The silent atmosphere is ideal for avid book reader and inspiring for creative person. Cycling and trekking in the hilly areas are also other options of physical activity for Eco conscious people. Overall it was a satisfying experience and a weekend to be remembered and cherished for long and definitely to be shared and recommended.

The Home-stay Is Worth For Money

5.9/7
Posted 24 May, 2017

On my family holiday trip I went to the Shimoga in the month of June 2017. I booked my stay through over a call. I booked Non-AC room. That was a home stay so whatever they had prepared we have to eat. They had provided local food and that was good. We went the hotel by Cab. There was a travel desk in the hotel. There was no special arrangement for the kids. The travelers can go to relax. The location of the hotel was out of the city to relax. The place was very peaceful and silent. The travelers can't reach easily. That was in between the forest. The exterior of the hotel was very beautiful. The reception staff received and behaved very well. The food service was provided on time. Whatever I ordered that was provided us.

 1) Route-1 : Via Santosh hotel route is marked using yellow and green color.  If you are coming from Shimoga, you will hit small village "Nittur", you required to proceed 5. 5 Kms on same road. You will find small mud road towards your left. This point is marked as Trek route-1 1 : Trek starting in above map. If you are travelling by public vehicle then you can get down here and start your trek. If you are travelling by private vehicle then you can carry on till "Hotel Santosh", Route marked in yellow color is mud road. Distance between Main road and Hotel Santosh is around 5. 5 KMS. You will find breakfast or basic food here. Actual trek starts from this point. Distance between "Hotel Santosh" and guest house" is about 4 KMS. This stretch is marked using green color. Initial part of this stretch is much steep. You need to trek inside forest, You will find here "leeches world" in post monsoon. Couple of times you will come out of the forest and again your trek trail enters to the forest. After trekking 4KMS you will find PWD guest house. PWD guest house offers you accommodation and food(basic food). 2) Route-2 : Via Hindumane falls route is marked using blue, brown and purple color. If you are travelling from Shimoga side then you will find trek starting point before Nittur (1. 5 KMS before Nittur. Initial trek route is marked in blue  line in above map, this is very easy roue as you will be walking on tar road, need to walk 2. 5 Kms Approx. Till primary school(If you have private vehicle then you can take vehicle till primary school).  You need to take right turn.  . Next stretch is marked in brown line, This trek trail  also easy (If you have private vehicle then your vehicle can go up to little more distance then road condition is not that good, you can park your vehicle), There are many small roads which may make you little confuse(If you are taking this trek route then better to get guide along with you). Purple line represents trek trail inside forest. This trek stretch  is most difficult part of your trek. You will find beautiful Hindumane falls on the way. [Warning: During monsoon make sure that Hindumane falls is not overflowing as you need to cross this falls], This is pretty steep climb inside forest. Length of this stretch is around 2 KMS. This trek rail reaches again jeep trail which is marked in blue line. You need to trek on jeep road for another 2KMS to reach PWD guest house, This route is marked in blue line.

In the Lap of Royalty

7.0/7
Posted 10 Mar, 2016

While most homestays give good service, after my stay at Kolavera I now how the erstwhile royalty felt like. Right from the entry, one gets a great impression - the facilities are spic and clean, separate and spacious dining, good landscaping great view of the plantation. While the room may be small, this hardly matters as you would tend to spend the entire day outdoors. The food offers a wide variety especially of the local food, excellent non-veg, fish specially prepared for me. The family were very courteous and took great care of us, kept us occupied with regular chit chats. Lots of places around to see, keeps the evenings entertaining. I especially remember the morning plantation walk and for a urbanite this was a taste of nature at its best. We drove down to Kundadri which is a mountain peak and gave us a great view of the entire region . . In the evenings there may be a bit of mosquitoes, but that is nature. The rooms have good mosquito nets on the windows. Rajashekhar Bhat

Wonderful home stay ...

On my holiday trip I visited Shimoga. I went there along with my family in the month of May 2017. We booked the room by calling them directly. The Front office staff was responding well. They guided me with routes on phone. They gave me warm welcome. They gave all detailed information. We reached the place by own vehicle. It was self-driven and parking facility was spacious. It is free service. The service of the hotel was prompt. The room was clean. Bed spreads were new. There was satellite TV. The food was based on our demands. The location of the hotel was well placed. It was a home stay. It s covered with lush green. It is on outskirts of the city. There should be the own vehicle or you should rent a car. The appearance of the hotel was beautiful. Hotel looks traditional. It looks old hotel type. The room was well maintained. It is like home with attached bathrooms. It was big and spacious. It was non-AC room. Bed and cot were new and well kept. We had food in the hotel. It was good and tasty. They were giving options for food. It was Shimoga type cuisine. They were taking personal care of us. There were no other activities. There was playing area for children and food courts were available for kids. I will suggest the other travelers to keep track of routes as the hotel is in a remote area. It is wonderful stay in the homestay.

Over the years i have developed a special liking for home stays especially in hill stations, I guess it’s the warmth the food the location and the hospitality which makes them special. So last week when a couple of friends and me planned an outing to explore the beauty of Malnad during the monsoon, I was hoping to find a home stay which would help me retain this impression and I am so glad Kolavara Heritage did it.
