The Kolkata Metro is India’s first underground Metro railway. It extends over a length of around 25 km, starting from Dum Dum near Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Airport and ending at Kavi Subhash station at New Garia. Initially, the length of the railway route was some 17 km and ended at Tollygunge. Later, it was extended to another 8 km, till New Garia Station. This fast and efficient metro railway covers almost all the densely populated areas of Kolkata, in very less time.

The metro railways cover important areas like Shyambazar, Sovabazar, Girish Park, Mahatma Gandhi Road, Central, Chandni Chowk, Esplanade, Park Street, Rabindra Sadan, Kalighat, New Garia and others.

Each metro rail is capable of carrying around 2558 passengers and is equipped with advanced technology. It offers services at an interval of 5 to 15 minutes and its prime concern is the safety of the passengers. For the convenience of the travellers, most of the stations are equipped with escalators and cooled air is forced inside the metro for proper ventilation.

Well and crowded in office hours

Took ride in metro, only thing I missed or not managed to see the waiting time for metro. The metro is crowded is office hours as usual in Mumba in Delhi so nothing new in that, but it runs and the ticket is quite economical then other cities I felt.

A Zip through the City

A visit to Kolkata is incomplete without a ride in the famous Metro here. The first of its kind in India, this mode of transport has been a boon to many commuters. The best part about it is that the rates are cheap too.It is an railway system that can cover the entire length of the city within a span of just 30 mins. I would suggest this to everyone visiting Kolkata who wants to travel at a quick pace.

First Metro Of India

The Kolkata Metro is a metro railway transport system serving the city of Kolkata and the districts of South 24 Parganas and North 24 Parganas in the Indian state of West Bengal. The network currently consists of one operational line from Noapara to Kavi Subhash. Five other lines are under construction. The Kolkata Metro was the first Metro Railway in India, opening for commercial services from 1984. This fact is proudly taken and the Kolkata Metro is called India's First, Kolkata's Pride. The transport problem of Kolkata drew the attention of city planners. It was soon realized that something had to be done and quickly in order to cope with the situation. The idea of building an Railway for Kolkata to try to solve the problems.

Oldest metro in India

Kolkata metro was the first metro in India. But sadly, the facilities have not been renovated since. The AC metros are fine but crowded. The Non AC metros are extremely difficult to sail through (considering it is underground and very crowded). The only good thing about the metro is the convenience. Best and cheapest way to travel in Kolkata city.

It's actually good

It's cheap, it gets you most places and is quite frequent. For a Metro system which I expected to be almost a relic as the city's tram it is more than functional. The ticketing system is pretty similar to other Metros in India and quite simple. I would recommend Kolkata Metro as the way to travel if and whenever there is access to it considering the city's sleepy and dead slow road traffic.

Best and comfortable journey by Metro

Kolkata Metro is an excellent ride to save your time, to avoid traffic jams it's a comfortable and safe journey also. Now a days it's extended to the North Noapara and to the South five to six stoppage more after Tollygunge. When I visit Kolkata, I always prefer to avail Metro Rail.

The first Metro services of India

Kolkata Metro was the first Metro services in India. Although now, when Metro services are prevalent in Delhi as well as other cities of India, this is no more an attraction, but would have been definitely one of the marvellous moving beauties of its time.Services are quick and on time with only negative point that on Sunday's the Metro services start from 10 am, which should not be the case, as there might be the passengers wanting to move before time as well.
