About Kundala lake

Kundala is an idyllic place in Munnar located on the way to Top Station or Top Slip.  Surrounded by rolling hills and valleys of dense forests, Kundala is known for the Kundala Arch Dam or Sethuparvati Dam and Kundala Lake.

Kundala is situated about 27 km from the town of Munnar at an altitude of 1700 m above sea level. Tourists often go to the top of Kundala Dam to have a panoramic view of the catchment area of the Dam. Kundala Dam, which was built in 1946 for Pallivasal Hydro Electric Project, is considered as Asia’s first Arch Dam.

Tourists visiting Kundala Lake often go for a ride in Kashmiri – Shikara boats. Pedal boats are also available at Kundala Lake.

The Golf Course ground and Kundala Tea Plantations are also in the vicinity of Kundala Dam and Lake.

A lovely orange boat floating in the back waters of Kerala. Trees lined up on the near by hill in perfect symmetry admiring it. Sometimes you feel jealous about local people of Munnar for obvious reasons. Escape from your city life and get lost.

Great Views & Sightseeing. Excellent place to visit on the way to Echo point. It is quite Similar to the Dam - Mattupetty. One can enjoy the speed boat ride - which is expensive.

Nice view with horse rides and Shikara boat rides. You also find local shops selling some nice takeaways from town like forest honey, home made chocolates and other stuff. Good for some nice snaps especially of the woods.

"Very attractive Dam"

  • 6.5/7
  • Posted May 6, 2016
This Dam is adjacent to Mattupetty Dam. We 7 team members visited the sight on 12th April 2016. While journey to top station we got a nice lunch at near by this Dam sight. The Hotel is very nice and homely food. No any other food court available there than this. This Dam sight is very enjoyable. Management is very poor as well as neatness is very bad.

"Cool breeze with awesome view"

Kundala dam lake comes on the way when you are returning from Top station so people who are visiting top station can halt at Kundala dam and just enjoy the beauty of the lake. Some pictures clicked here look exactly like some high profile location pictures where you get the half fogged out mountains with lake as backdrop. There are many huge trees here for guys who wanna click photos, feels exactly like the forests in Manali.

"A nice place to visit in Munnar"

  • 4.5/7
  • Posted Feb 4, 2016
It's worth visiting this place when you come to Munnar. I would recommend this place over Mattupetty Dam.

Boating here is actually good. You can spend at least half an hour for boating and there are lot of shops with handicrafts and other items for some shopping. Also there is horse riding facility available.

The best time to visit this place will be evenings or by early morning 8AM as the place will be quite chilling at these times. Make sure that you have sweaters if you are going at these times.

Don't forget to taste the bread omelets and the home made chocolates from this location.

"Lake in the valley"

  • 6.0/7
  • Posted Jul 2, 2015
It looks like a Himalayan lake. All sides are beautiful with green mountains. They allow you to do a pedal boating in the lake for a very reasonable price. Photogenic place I will say. If you are on a a family vacation, come here and eat a lunch together. Spend some time with nature. It's not advisable to swim in the lake though.

PS: Please do not litter. Don't kill its beauty :)

"A picnic spot with panoramic view"

  • 5.5/7
  • Posted Jun 9, 2015
Kundala Lake and surroundings, a pictographic place, about 23 kms from Munnar is situated at a height of 1700 meters above MSL. Kundala Lake is an artificial reservoir of a small dam having arch shape which is believed to the first arch dam in Asia. The area has become a fascinating picnic spot in Idukki District of Kerala. A narrow side road on the top of the dam gives a panoramic view of the area. While I visited it was not raining and we just sat there watching the mountains, the fast moving clouds and the tranquil lake gave a comforting feel. The Lake has various boating facilities like Row boats, Kashmiri-Shikara ride or pedal boats that take us around the dam and to the interiors of the lake. Also horseback ride and balloon shooting games are fun activities, kids and adults equally can try. Though the reservoir has boating facilities we didn't opt for that but just spent time watching the nature and its beauty. There is a Golf course by the side of the lake owned by Tata Tea Company. The lake is surrounded by eucalyptus and pine trees and Aruvikkara Waterfall that sprinkles grandly.
