Kundapur is the administrative headquarters and capital of the Kundapura Taluk, which is approximately 36 km from Udupi. It is famous for the Kundeshwar Temple and is commonly known as the town of sun. This place was once a main port of the Rajas of Byndoor (Baindoor). Tourists visiting the region can see a fort, which was built during 16th century by the German and Portuguese missionaries, who settled down here.
After the death of Tipu Sultan, the entire taluk came under the control of British colonial rulers. The Kundapur town is surrounded by water on three sides and can be reached by the local boat service, which connects it with Kodi, Gangolli and nearby villages.
