Our famous auto-rickshaws may soon be ferrying tourists from London Bridge to other sight-seeing spots in London’s famous Westend area. They will be run by TucTuc Ltd, set up by Dominic Ponniah a young entrepreneur in his twenties. TucTuc already operates a fleet of 12 rickshaws in the seaside town of Brighton since 2006, and now 30 more are expected to hit the streets of London once the necessary permits are got.

“Passengers will include families, tourists and commuters,” said Ponniah, and the key to the success will be because rickshaws are “quick, efficient and affordable”.
What is of interest is that the rickshaws are made in India and run by CNG, on the lines of the Delhi auto-rickshaws, making them totally emission free. “The rickshaws are made in Gujarat, India - they are the only vehicles in Asia to be made to European standards,” said Ponniah. However, they have some additional touches unlike our local three-wheelers, significantly seat belts and cushioned pads behind the head – something that would be much appreciated in India too!
