Lord Anantha Padmanabha Temple is dedicated to the form of Lord Vishnu, in which He was incarnated as Sri Anantha Padmanabha Swamy. The principle deity of Lord Vishnu is seen lying on Anantha., the snake that floats upon the cosmic waters in Vaikunta. Besides Him, His wife Goddess Lakshmi is also seated.
According to the mythological belief, Lord Brahma was born out of the navel of Sri Anantha Padmanabha Swamy. As per Skanda Purana, this temple is believed to be installed by Rishi Markandeya in Dwapara Yuga. For the darshan of Lord Vishnu, Sri Anantha Padmanabha Swamy did ‘tapasya’ for nearly 1400 years. In the cave where the sage was doing his yoga sadhana, Lord Vishnu appeared as Anantha Padmanabha Swamy in Shali Gram form.
For having To have special darshan of the idol of Lord Vishnu, devotees have to enter the cave between 5 am and 2 pm. It is believed that the main temple was constructed by Hyderabad Nawab around 400 years ago, when one day Lord Sri Anantha Padmanabha Swamy came into his dream and asked him to build the temple.
