Amritsar food, sight-seeing and shopping options
I'm not sure I can do justice to the kind of food available in this city!! Even for a foodie like me...it was overload of food....not complaining ...I loved it all whether its the dhaba's offering you piping hot parathas, the roadside stalls with a variety of kababs, the super large glass of lassi or the divine food at the gurudwara ...its a food lovers paradise, you may though want to leave behind your idea of dieting, esp when you see them dunk your food in more than generous portions of desi ghee/butter ( lassi included :) Having said this, Kesar da Dhaba is a must do eating place - one of the oldest dhaba's serving you delicious food at prices of the 1916's !! Shopping can be tricky as they spot a tourist a mile away and plan to fleece you even before you enter the shop !! So whether its the traditional juttis or Punjabi salwar suit its priced at double its actual price ... you may want to do a round of the local market to get an idea of the prices and do bargain ...its worth the effort ! I found dry fruits available at reasonable prices and fresh from kabul (esp the almonds & walnuts). Needless to say, I lugged home quite a bit !! The sight seeing is fabulous ...the must see is the golden temple - do go back in the evening to see the temple lit in the night ...its a divine experience and stay back to watch the night ceremony. The Jalianwala bagh and the hyped but utterly enjoyable Wagah border experience ...there is some kick in watching our soldiers doing their best and watching our flag flutter in the background ! Needless to say, its quite amusing to watch people from the other side peering down the road to catch a glimpse of us Indians while we strain our necks to catch a glimpse of our dear neighbors ! There are a few temples and a museum to see too.
