Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park

Situated 29 km. from Port Blair on the south-western coast of South Andaman is the massive Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park.

Wandoor, a small fishing hamlet is the entry point to the park, which comprises of 15 islands and several islets spread across 280 sq. km. The Park was established for the protection of marine life including corals and nesting sea turtles.

The area boasts of a vast stretch of enchanting underwater life, bushy vegetated islands, magnificent coral reefs, sparkling sandy beaches and dense mangrove forests. The tourist is treated to the sight of a rich marine life that consists of colorful fishes, mollusks, shells, starfish, turtles, salt-water crocodile etc. Wandoor has some good beaches but beware of strong currents.

The famous islands of Red Skin and Jolly Buoy with its mangrove creeks, tropical rain forests, more than 50 types of corals, and rare under-water marine life can be explored by hiring smaller dingies for moving around. Special Glass bottomed Boats are the best way to see the colorful marine life.

Snorkeling is a must do in these waters. What’s great is that you don’t need to know swimming for it. Snorkeling equipment can be hired at reasonable rates. Guides are there to assist you.

The Park is an ornithologist’s delight. Photography enthusiasts will have a field day shooting at the colorful variety of birds that frequent the region.

Even though food and drink are provided on the organized tours, it is advisable to carry a packed lunch from Port Blair.

A ride in the glass bottomed boat, Scuba Diving amongst the corals and Snorkeling amidst the colorful underwater world is a once in a lifetime experience. So go ahead and be adventurous.
