The Mattoor Thiru Vellaman Thulli Shiva Temple is dedicated to the deity installed by the father of Sree Sankara, Sarman Namboodiri. This temple is located at a distance of around 2 km from the town of Kalady. Thiru Vellaman Thulli means a white dancing deer.
As per mythology, the parents of Sree Sankara could not walk to the nearby temple due to old age. As a result, Lord Shiva appeared in Sarman Namboodiri’s dream and asked him to follow a white deer.
Next day, a white dancing deer appeared in front of the house, following whom, Sarman Namboodiri reached an idol. Lord Shiva asked him to worship this idol instead of praying at the distant temple.
