Mawphlang,
located 25 km from Shillong, is popular for being home to Meghalaya's most
renowned forest grove. Known as the Sacred
Forest, it is revered by
the local Jaintias and offers a glimpse into the history of the Khasis and
their religious beliefs.
The Sacred Forest
is largely a grove of Castanopsis kurzii trees. Considered as natures own
museum, the trees seen here share space with epiphytic growths of aroids,
pipers, fern-allies and orchids.
Botanists, naturalists and
plant-lovers from all over the world are attracted to the Sacred Forest.
The Forest is also known by different names
such as Ki Law Adong (prohibited forest), Ki Law Shnong (village forest) and Ki
Law Kynti (private forest). |
