Mumbai Zoo, officially known as Veermata Jijabhai Bhonsle Udyan, is located near Byculla. Built during the British rule in 1861, the zoo was then named as Victoria Gardens. The site of this zoo is in proximity to the chawls and slums, the low income housing colonies, of Mumbai.

At the main entrance of the garden lies a clock tower that depicts Italian Renaissance; however the clock does not work anymore due to lack of maintenance. The Mumbai Zoo is home to a large number of endangered species, along with other animals, including lions, bears, tigers, elephants and monkeys.

Along with the Botanical Garden, Mumbai Zoo sprawls across an area of 48 acres. Being the only zoo in the city, it is frequented by hundreds of tourists every month. Travellers can reach this place via public transport modes such as buses, auto rickshaws or taxis. It is also located at a walking distance from the Byculla Railway Station.

"The Mumbai Zoo" new review

  • 7.0/7
  • Posted 3 weeks ago
Starting of with the ticket counter to enter the zoo, we saw statues of some animals besides the counter, like tiger, crocodile, etc. Then, after entering the actual zoo, our first attraction was monkeys. We also saw two small and cute baby monkeys. Second animal we saw was actually a reptile, crocodile in a small artificial lake. We saw strongest of all animals, elephants. There were two elephants playing with grass. The we entered the children park with lots of slides, see-saw, There we had facility of drinking wate and toilets. We saw hippopotamus on ground entering the puddle. We saw some chairs and decided to take a break. We entered a cold building where we saw penguins in tank. Taking their photos was not allowed by the authority. Then we saw a large cage of lots of birds. There were three more separate cages for parrots, love birds and ostriches. There were lots of bats on many trees inside the zoo. At last, we saw the gate to exit. This was my visit to zoo.

"Losing this glory"

  • 5.0/7

This zoo was an once upon a pride of Mumbai city. Now it is deteriorating day by day. You can see very few animals likes an Elephant, Rhinoceros etc but no Lion or Tiger. Cleanliness is not maintained.

"A big letdown"

  • 2.0/7
  • Posted Dec 18, 2015
At first I visited the zoo when I was in my primary school that time there were many animals, birds and many species of various fancy animals and flora fauna. But nowadays there is nothing much there, all the animals are old and nothing new to see, really a big letdown.

"Good place for sightseeing"

  • 7.0/7
  • Posted Nov 7, 2015
When we went to the Zoo of Mumbai with my family, first of all the people get bored. But when we went in the middle of Zoo we saw the White Tiger, it was so wonderful and beautiful. Tigher makes the attractive reason for coming to the Zoo. It was wonderful trip for my family. I say all to see the Zoo of Mumbai with your family. It is more beautiful in the Morning, in Noon and in spring season.
