Murudeshwara Temple is the main attraction in Murudeshwara, which is situated on the top of a hill Kanduka Giri. The temple has a twenty-storied Rajagopura and at the entrance, there are concrete structures of two full sized elephants. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple has a huge statue of Shiva, which is around 123 ft in height. Moreover, the temple also houses a Shivalinga, which forms the central deity. The statue of Shiva was built by Shivamogga's Kashinath and his son Sridhar.

It is believed that to attain immortality and obtain Atma Linga, Ravana worshipped Lord Shiva. His wish was granted with a condition that the Linga should never touch the ground. It was evening and Ravana had to offer prayer to Lord Shiva, which was also his regular practice. So a Brahmin boy while passing by was called upon and was asked to hold the Linga until he finishes his prayers. The boy agreed on condition that if Ravana does not return after being called three times, he would keep the Linga on the ground and go. It was Lord Ganesha guised as a Brahmin boy, who played a prank with Ravana and placed the Linga on the ground at Murudeshwara.

The temple is constructed using granite and depicts South Indian style of architecture. There are numerous sculptures including concrete sculptures of maidens in the complex of temple. Located between Honnavar and Bhatkal, the temple is surrounded by the Arabian Sea on all three sides.

"Finest temple architecture with a big idol of Lord Shiva"

  • 6.50/7
  • Posted Aug 3, 2014
One of finest temple architecture, along with a big idol of Lord Shiva, visible from the approaching trains. Being on the west coast of India, it is great to watch sunset from the clean beaches of this place. The place being very small, and can be walked across in no time. But don't expect five star hotels in this small village.

Murudeshwara is located on the west coast of india. Murudeshwara temple is very beautiful. Well maintained. 123 feet Lord Shiva sitting high up view is amazing. 20-storied gopuram is awesome. Prasad given in temple is very delicious. Museum inside the Lord Shiva statute will give us the whole story about Lord shiva. Overall this place is awesome.

"Simply majestic!"

  • 6.00/7
  • Posted Apr 11, 2014
I had longed to see this temple because the sheer size of the statue is spellbinding. And against the splendid backdrop of the Arabian sea, it's a must see attraction even for the not-so-devout.

Murudeshwar is a small pilgrim town, and at any given point, there will be bus loads of pilgrims offering their respects to this imposing shrine. The Gopuram opposite the statue has a lift which takes you to the 18th floor for a nominal charge of Rs 10. Take it in spectacular beauty of the Arabian sea, the seaside town of Murudeshwar and the awe inspiring Shiva statue.

Cleanliness here is a major issue, and I can't understand why the devotees lack civic sense. It's a place of worship, so atleast try and observe cleanliness here, if not anywhere else! Is that too much to ask for? There were paper pieces strewn around, and at one corner of the 18th floor it actually stank of urine!! You are supposed to remove your shoes downstairs and go barefoot. With this kind of unhygienic conditions, would make you wince and think 20 times before you venture up there.

Towards dusk, the statue is lit up and that's another amazing sight in itself.

Situated on top of the hill just off the coast, this place has an added beauty factor attached to it apart from having a huge Shiva statue and the religious prowess of it.

"A scenic beach facing temple"

  • 5.00/7
  • Posted Mar 7, 2014
This Shiva and Shakti temple is a real good place to visit for a short holiday visit for a family to enjoy the thrills of beach entertainment accompanied with some divine spirituality. You can see both sunrise and sunset from this location. If you plan a longer stay you can explore deep sea diving as well.
